  • Podenca Ibicenco, Valencia – safe foster/adopting home wanted

    Valencia Limba 250 3 10 2012Yet another injured, in Valencia. She’s not a year old yet and from what I can make out of the Internet translator, she was bred by a hunter, ran off at the first shots, was picked up by another hunter where the same thing happened. So now she desperately needs a place of safety, where her leg can be examined and treated. She’s been named Limba. The association need to find somewhere safe for her within the next couple of weeks.

  • Podenco Nika, still waiting for a foster home through no fault of his own.

    And Nika – still desperate for a foster home to convalesce. Please can someone take him to nurse him back to health. I’m putting this appeal out again, even though a friend of mine contacted SVPAP initially and offered to take him, She was told he was sorted out, and has now taken on another injured podenco to rehabilitate.     SVPSP have serious financial problems and are in danger of being closed down, which means about 500 animals in their care would lose their security of an association, Nika included. They have an appeal for help on Facebook, I’ve just made a donation. Let’s all try and help them by getting Nika in a foster home.

  • University Vet Students lend a hand in Cordoba

    Tanke street 10 2012 250Laura writes from Cordoba. ‘We are some students of veterinary medicine in Cordoba (Spain) and 2 weeks ago we found an old female podenco here. This is the story……..please help us:

    This is Tanke, she is a female Podenco Andaluz dog about 10 years old. She is educated, really lovely and obedient.

    She was found battered and abandoned 2 weeks ago in Cordoba (Spain). When we found her, she had a huge wound where the microchip was before. Now she is cured…..but during the veterinary examination, it was discovered that she has crystalline sclerosis and retinal atrophy, so she will lose sight gradually.

  • Podenca found in trash bin, savagely attacked – galgueros again!

    There have been stories on Galgo News about galgos dumped in rubbish hins and being rescued; this is the first time I’ve had a story about a podenca dumped in a trash bin.

    Someone has stabbed her, destroyed her neck to remove the microchip. After she was thrown in the trash. she remained there for two days without help. She somehow ate garbage to stay alive. Her neck had been torn to remove the microchip, until someone realised she was there and called the police and saved her. She is now in Madrid in a veterinary hospital, where they are trying to save her. Her neck has been operated on, and they are working to save her. She has been named Vida.

    The volunteer says, ‘I curse with all my strength these monsters, torturers, no guts, no heart, that they are capable of doing these savage actions. This poor dog has had to suffer a horrible agony. We will fight tooth and nail to save her! Irina.animalessinhogar@gmail.com

  • Aanifeira in Portugal – saving a blind podenco

    Aanifeira gaia- 200 7 10 2012We sometimes question the wisdom of spending valuable and scarce resources on saving very sick or injured animals but, given the choice, I’m sure we would all make the effort. How many lovely stories have we read about hounds saved – Esperanza, Alphonso, Ulysees, and now Miel. Here is a wonderful story about a blind podenco in Portugal, rescued sick, starving, injured and blind from a major road. Aanifeira gave her a chance – here’s her story.

    Finca Bonita prison 190Many of the Spanish refuges and associations are very small, existing from month to month on donations, the local councils turning a blind eye to the problem of abandonment of dogs, even though by law they should provide a dog pound.

    112carlotagalgos is one such small association in Malaga. Charl del Rio has been working on behalf of the galgos and podencos in Spain for many years, latterly caring for traumatised, injured and sick dogs prior to rehoming. She’s also given talks in local schools about the problem of abandonment of dogs. Her dream has been to have an educational centre where children can visit and learn to respect animals and care for them, especially dogs. Now she hopes her dream is about to come true. But she needs your help. Here’s the story.

  • Life in Valencia- not all it’s cracked up to be!

    You will remember the post recently about three podencos found hung, and shot. Here is another podenco, was he a victim of hanging also, or has he spent years growing up on the end of a rope, which is the fate of thousands of podencos? Luckily he has been rescued, from Xativa, Valencia.

  • Almeria killing station – a Podenco Andaluz survives with Levriers du Sud

    Almeria puppies 8 2012Do you remember these 3 terrified little babies, in Almeria perrera? There was confusion as to whether and which associations had saved them. Sadly, one of them died, but the other two were saved and went to Levriers du Sud in France. So now, let me introduce you to Gasby, rehomed already. Thank you to everyone involved in giving him and his sibling a forever life.

  • Pepis Refuge, Seville – dogs poisoned by local person! Please help

    Pepis Refuge 190As if the volunteers helping the Spanish animals didn’t have enough to contend with,
    rescuing and repairing abandoned dogs and cats, they suffer at the hands of those against what they do. Some people are just pure evil. Pepis Refuge near Seville recently suffered an horrendous attack on their dogs, Alan Brian tells the sickening story.

    ‘It all started a few days ago for us, I say that because our vet told us it takes about 9 days to act, warferin or rat poison as it is better known. We had a beautiful chocolate brown podenco boy who had the most fantastic nature, we called him Chet. When we came to clean him one morning, we saw blood in his pen and he was looking quite sad.
