  • To The Moon and Back – for podenco and galgo lovers

From Bev Farmer   –   For all you Podenco and Galgo Lovers..

I was so honoured to have been asked to contribute for a book created by Marga Hendrix of Viva la Vida Foundation that shines a light on the Podencos and Galgos of Spain.  I wrote two pieces: one about Tilly, my first Podenco who began my journey with these remarkable dogs, and another about how we began rescuing Podencos and the desperate situation they face in Spain.

But this book is so much more than my words. (more…)

This is my definitive guide to the Podenco – how they went from revered companions to royalty to on death row in a Spanish perrera.  There are several different types of podenco, depending on whereabouts in Spain and the Spanish Islands they come from  This is the perfect Xmas present for anyone wanting to know more about the Podenco.

All sale proceeds are donated to appeals for help with vet fees from Spanish rescue associations.

  • Podenca puppy Pia – rescued injured from a perrera – please help with vet fees

From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends

Meet Pia.  This brave little Podenco puppy was discovered in a perrera at just 6 weeks old—emaciated, suffering with giardia, and with a dislocated knee. Without help, she wouldn’t have survived.
Thanks to Suspiros de Cuatro Patas, Pia received urgent care and has recently undergone specialist orthopedic surgery. She’s now receiving ongoing physiotherapy—a treatment that comes with significant veterinary costs. Galgopod have already stepped in with an emergency donation, but more support is urgently needed and they have organised a FB fund raiser to help her,
Every donation will help cover Pia’s treatment and also support the many other Podencos waiting at the refuge.

  • Update on Podenca Puppy Pia after major sugery

    Pia Update from Bev Farmer

Thank you all for sending so much love and good energy for Pia. Her surgery went well and she came home from the clinic yesterday. Today, she’s bright-eyed, alert, eating well, a— a little fighter through and through.

This was no small surgery. Pia had a grade 4 patella luxation — the most severe level — meaning her kneecap was permanently dislocated. Without this operation, her quality of life would have been severely impacted.

Now begins her road to recovery: several weeks of very restricted exercise, daily physio, and plenty of TLC. Luckily, Pia has a dream team around her — Luisa is caring for her with so much love, I’m always just a phone call away, and the rescue has a skilled physiotherapist guiding every step.

Thanks to Suspiros de Cuatro Patas who first rescued Pia they have given her the chance at a pain-free, happy future — and we can’t wait to see her run freely one day.

  • Podenca Amira – ill with Coronavirus – please help with vet fees

Sunday 3/08 Amira had a vet appointment scheduled. This extra checkup was supposed to determine why she was losing weight, and it turned into a rollercoaster of emotions. For a couple of days, she refused to eat any food on her own, and that remained a complete mystery to us—until yesterday.

The vet left nothing to chance. Amira’s eyes looked dull and empty. Distemper was immediately suspected. A blood sample was taken for analysis. Fortunately, the test was negative. A small relief—but short-lived. The next option: Parvo and the Coronavirus. We held our breath.

  • A long journey ahead for Podenca Amira – dying by the roadside

The story so far about Amira, from Sandy Galgoslover

28/07 Last night, at sunset, a remarkable rescue operation took place on a highway heading towards Níjar. A Spanish girl was driving unsuspectingly when she spotted a thin, frail dog staggering along the road. It turned out to be a Podenco girl, dehydrated, confused, and so weak she couldn’t even stand. Her paws were red and painful, burned by the hot asphalt she had walked on in her desperate search for water and a little shade.

  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – a tail of 2 podencos

    GRA Oreo 2 350
From Sandy at Galgos Rescue Almeria

The story of Oreo – a guardian angel on four legs. On January 18th, we welcomed a special boy to our Rescue Center. A dog with a big heart and a backpack of his past. We named him Oreo.

Oreo’s story begins in a lonely place, in the dry and deserted Campo region of Cartagena. As a young dog, he was dumped there, left without help or hope. He had to survive on his own, looking for food, water and safety. One day, Oreo witnessed something terrible. A young Podenco – also dumped and vulnerable – was attacked and cornered by a group of feral dogs. Oreo, despite his own fears and insecurities, didn’t hesitate for a second. He listened to his heart and came to the dog’s aid. That day, he saved a life.

  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – update on the recently rescued podenca

    GAR Luna 5 2025 350
From Sandy at Galgos Rescue Almeria

We have named the little podenca who recently came into our care Luna. Despite her fragile figure and the tough past she undoubtedly carries with her, she showed herself to be brave and strong when we took her to the vet where she underwent a full check-up. Her weight is still on the low side, but with loving care and the right nutrition, that is only a matter of time. Her ears were carefully cleaned and everything was checked carefully.

Because her immune system is still vulnerable, we decided to only have an identification chip placed today and to take a blood sample. Fortunately, that sample brought good news: Luna tested negative for the most common Mediterranean diseases.
