There are dozens of unsung heroes in Spain, helping the abandoned dogs and cats, funding much of their care themselves whilst working to earn a living. Macu is one such lady, in Seville. Some of the appeals I have posted on Galgo News and Podenco Post have been from her. Here she explains what she tries to do, and the problems she faces, like so many volunteers breed dogs.
‘Good afternoon everybody, I´ll try to summarize.
In this settlement by Seville there are more or less 20 shacks with 30 dogs each one (with their owners). I´ve spent 3 years of my life there, saving galgos, podencos and mixed dogs none wanted by their owners.
As I saw that situation never finished and I couldn´t sort out the world, I decided to fix it by my own. So I contacted SEPRONA, GUARDIA CIVIL, the CITY COUNCIL and made a REPORT. They were no help, no use at all, and my lawyer advised me to give up. Reluctantly I did.
Now a contact there continues saving these dogs and calls me to take out the most urgent ones and I´ve continued doing it.
This week I received a phonecall from an important association of Seville specializing in galgos and I got really happy. But I got sad again because they have saved 26 malnourished, hurt and ill galgos but don’t do anything to help podencos and mixed dogs.
I can´t ask them to save all the dogs, it´s impossible, this association does more than they can, their shelter is full and they´ve taken 26 galgos more there.
I need some more help here. These are three podencas that live with six more in the same jail at this camp. You can see how these poor dogs live there, and on the street there are more or less 12 mixed dogs, podencos… but I don´t have any photos yet.
In these photos you can see:
Podenca 1 young and small
Podenca 2 young and a bit bigger
Podenca 3 young also
There´s no more information until I can take them out of there and now I don´t have foster homes for them and I cant pay a residence (kennels) for almost 20 dogs. Now I have one more at home that was pregnant but her puppies died and now I have to stop the milk.
Now the important ones are all these podencos and mixed dogs. I need help from any more people who can take these dogs if I get them out, or help me pay for kennel fees and vet fees for microchip, blood tests, vaccinations. Then I need help to find homes for these dogs. If anyone can help, please contct me.
Every time I remember the horror of that place, it makes me really sick, because at the moment I can’t get the dogs out, and the authorities do NOTHING!’
