  • 14 more Spanish hunting dogs starved and abandoned in Tarragona

Confiscation of the 14 dogs that form part of the investigated rehala.

Officers found several malnourished animals on the property, with no water, food or any type of identification. More than a dozen were rescued in a state of extreme weakness. The autopsy will allow to check if they were used for hunting activities.  Rehala dogs are usually podencos.

The dogs remained locked up in disused farm trailers, with no access to water, food or veterinary care. The deceased specimens were not wearing a microchip or ID collar, which hampered their traceability, while the survivors showed clear symptoms of abandonment and disease, according to the preliminary veterinary report.

  • Seville – the horror behind the glitter that tourists see

Seville podenco 4 250 Macu 1 2012There are dozens of unsung heroes in Spain, helping the abandoned dogs and cats, funding much of their care themselves whilst working to earn a living. Macu is one such lady, in Seville. Some of the appeals I have posted on Galgo News and Podenco Post have been from her. Here she explains what she tries to do, and the problems she faces, like so many volunteers breed dogs.

‘Good afternoon everybody, I´ll try to summarize.
In this settlement by Seville there are more or less 20 shacks with 30 dogs each one (with their owners). I´ve spent 3 years of my life there, saving galgos, podencos and mixed dogs none wanted by their owners.

  • Gran Canaria, dogs starved to death – Seprona on the case

Gran Canario podenco Ed July 2011 200 Podencoworld reports this story.

The Guardia Civil Seprona Santa Maria de Guía (Gran Canaria), has accused a man of an alleged crime of animal abuse and neglect after an investigation and finding several dogs in poor condition. One of the officers who went to investigate, found two lofts, which was a strong odour.

Upon entering the room he saw two podencos on chains. One of them was still alive, but emaciated due to malnutrition, probably because there was no trace of food and water around. A short distance away lay the body of another podenco, extremely thin in appearance and with several bite wounds, with clear signs of having been partially devoured. The Civil Guard found another dead dog, this time of the Boxer breed.

  • Happy Endings Final Feliz – only not such a happy ending.

This story is a sample of some of the things which happen to the wonderful volunteers in Spain, struggling to help the abandoned dogs.

‘For the last year we have been arranging car boot sales every Sunday in a place called El Marquesado, and successfully got an income for the animals that need help in our area. It has been very hard workload on all our volunteers, but they have done the job without complaining. This car boot sale has been held on what we thought was wasteland as this was an unfenced, abandoned area. We were unable to find out if anyone owned it.
