22 Podencos seized in Moaña in a joint operation of the #Seprona Prote Animais Morrazo and the Asociación de rescate animal Cadeliños
Locked up, caged, squeezed, with mange, sick, some chained, dead puppies….
The owner of the animals had them for hunting and sale, note in the Protectorate that he took in the 22 animals, 13 with a chip and 9 without identification, in the district shelter they have in Broullón.

These are the pictures of Pepis Dog Refuge on Christmas Day 2013, the day after we left after our visit to Jane and Alan and all their beautiful dogs.

This has never happened before on Christmas Day, complete devastation, very strong winds and torrential rain. After moving the dogs in the house from the ground floor to the upper floor for safety, which as you can see was fast filling with sewage water, to the upper floor.
As the forecast is for more storms tomorrow, we went up to the caravan and found the shed had been completely devastated, with all the expensive electronic equipment which ran our limited solar electricity and all Alan’s electric tools in thick mud and water. The solar we did have has now been destroyed and the solar panels were blown into the olive tree.
This beautiful podenca is Tula; she’s in the Scooby Residencia Valladolid, which I visited recently on my latest trip to Spain. Tula is a very timid, quiet Podenca Andaluz who came to Scooby from a perrera in Sevilla where they were going to euthanise her.
She is about 2 years old and has the most beautiful, but sad eyes. She is very timid but gains confidence when she sees the same person regularly. Then she comes to you and you can touch and pet her without problem. As shelter is not the place for her, where she sits in a corner, trembling because of all the strangers she sees. She is not afraid of other dogs, they give her a bit more confidence.
This is Podenca Luna, 7 months old, rescued by Macu. She is now in a foster home preparing for a forever home. She’s a medium size Podenca Andaluz and is young enough to train in obedience and agility, if you would like a dog with energy and loyalty. And don’t forget adorable Billy – I would so love to have him in my canine family, but 5 dogs is more than enough expense! He’s a small Podenco Andaluz, but these little guys have huge personalities and are a lot of fun to own.

This lovely young Podenca Andaluz, less than a year old, was rescued from the streets of Seville by Macu, with a rope around her neck, and a scalibor collar on, which she had obviously had to wear since a small puppy because it was infected with bugs etc. Naturally she is very fearful of humans, and is in a kennels, where the staff sadly don’t have time to rehabilitate her.
She currently has a liver problem from her condition and therefore needs a special diet, plus needing vaccinations etc.

‘This little fellow is Julian the Podenco. Last October a Canadian lady named Robin Waldman visited two shelters in Spain. One was suggested by GRIN, near Sevilla, called FBM (Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert). Robin volunteered there and soon met a galgo named Iker that she decided would come back home with her in the Spring.
In the meantime she also met a Podenco named Julian who also won her heart. He had been waiting for so long, no one asked for him.
More podencos from the shanty town outside Seville, Macu is desperately trying to save them, struggling to find space in shelters and foster homes. Desperation is the tone of her emails, and who can blame her when you see these poor souls, puppies terrified of what is happening to them, all needing feeding, veterinary checks, kennel fees paying. ‘I´ve taken another one out of the shacks settlement but it´s also really urgent. There are too many animals that need help and I´ve just taken out this poor one and a young female because they were the worse cases. I have too many in the residence (kennels) and I need help for this one.
He´s an old male. He has a bone fracture and it´s for sure he will spend a lot of time at the residence and I can´t keep him there for so long.
This poor podenco is only about 4 months old, in a deplorable state, skeletal, barely able to stand. Is extremely frightened. Please has anyone room to take him and save his life. He’s in Seville. Contact Anabel
There are dozens of unsung heroes in Spain, helping the abandoned dogs and cats, funding much of their care themselves whilst working to earn a living. Macu is one such lady, in Seville. Some of the appeals I have posted on Galgo News and Podenco Post have been from her. Here she explains what she tries to do, and the problems she faces, like so many volunteers breed dogs.
‘Good afternoon everybody, I´ll try to summarize.
In this settlement by Seville there are more or less 20 shacks with 30 dogs each one (with their owners). I´ve spent 3 years of my life there, saving galgos, podencos and mixed dogs none wanted by their owners.
