4 November 2026 – From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.
110 dogs rescued in the Valencia region — mostly Podencos.
In the last 15 years, I have taken Podencos from some terrible situations, but this rescue has to be one of the worst I have seen.
110 dogs, mostly Podencos, exposed to the full sun with no shelter, no access to water, tied with short chains, held in cages or crates and kept in overcrowded conditions. Suffering from severe malnutrition and showing various signs of abuse.
Despite the fact that working dogs such as Podencos are excluded from the protection of animal welfare legislation in Spain, the local police of Buñol still acted.
Following a warning from a neighbour, they opened an investigation and acted quickly, alongside SEPRONA of the Guardia Civil, to seize the dogs and take them to the animal shelter established by the Buñol City Hall.
Even in the absence of specific legal protection for these dogs, the police did not turn a blind eye. They acted, and 110 dogs now have a chance at a better life.
All of the dogs have received veterinary care and have now been judicially released, which means they are available for adoption.
Maybe the Podenco rescue community could come together and support the rescue who now has these dogs in their care.
Whether it is sharing the Podencos available for adoption, offering foster homes, or even helping to facilitate adoptions for them, every bit of help could make a difference.
They are currently in the process of putting profiles together, ready to post.
Please drop me a PM if you would like to help.
These dogs have already been through so much. Let’s see if we can come together as a community and help give them the chance of a better life.
