URGENT ACTION needed from all SPANISH ANIMAL RESCUE ASSOCIATIONS
From Plataforma NACURGENT: MAXIMUM DISTRIBUTION – MANIFESTING SAME DOGS SAME RIGHTS – Stick with your organization!.As you will know, they want to exclude hunting and working dogs from the royal decree of zoos nucleus their last hope of being protected. These dogs would be even more unprotected in a royal decree issued from agriculture that would only require registration, identification and a little more. Reporting the poor condition of the handrail would be even harder. -
12 October, start of the Spanish hunting season
October 12, marks the beginning of the hunting season and with it, the terrible countdown for thousands of greyhounds and hunting dogs in Spain. Once again, these noble animals, used and exploited, face an uncertain fate: abandonment, mistreatment, or death when they cease to be useful for hunting. The cycle of abuse is repeating. Countless innocent lives are already sentenced. Behind every specimen of breeding, there is a potential discard. Enough with the abuse and systematic neglect. It is urgent and necessary to put an end to uncontrolled breeding and the cruel discardment of greyhounds and hunting dogs. They deserve respect, love and an existence free of suffering, not mere tools to use and throw away.Follow us, support us and join us for the end of the hunt: https://linktr.ee/plataformanac -
Podenca puppy Pia – rescued injured from a perrera – please help with vet fees

From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends
Meet Pia. This brave little Podenco puppy was discovered in a perrera at just 6 weeks old—emaciated, suffering with giardia, and with a dislocated knee. Without help, she wouldn’t have survived. Thanks to Suspiros de Cuatro Patas, Pia received urgent care and has recently undergone specialist orthopedic surgery. She’s now receiving ongoing physiotherapy—a treatment that comes with significant veterinary costs. Galgopod have already stepped in with an emergency donation, but more support is urgently needed and they have organised a FB fund raiser to help her,Every donation will help cover Pia’s treatment and also support the many other Podencos waiting at the refuge. -
Bikejoring – get going with your Podenco!
I’ve published about canicross as an activity with your podenco, now let me introduce you to Bikejoring. You can read all about it on this link. Most podencos are intelligent active working dogs and sports like this suit them. So if you are not a runner for agility or canicross, get on your bike and ride with your dog!
Here are 2 Podenco Friends competing in the UK.

TheKennelKlub and Podenco Friends – saving the Lanzarote podencos
Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends is now helping Laura Johnson of TheKennelKlub with the Lanzarote podencos. Here’s what Bev writes.
‘A picture that says a thousand words……. So many podencos are subjected to such a harsh life they are never loved or treated with kindness like we do with out own dogs. They don’t get to sleep on a sofa o,r a comfy bed, if they are lucky they are are held in cages where they can sleep on the ground. Many don’t even get this, they are restrained on chains 24 hours 7 days a week only released when taken out on a hunt. Then they are abandoned if sick or old, for its much cheaper to get a pup or younger one, than pay for veterinary treatment.
The Podenco face two battles, a life of subjugation and then a lack of adoptions for they are not viewed suitable as a family pet, the odds are really stacked against them. On the Island of Lanzarote Podencos have been discovered in the most deplorable conditions held in holes in the ground with no natural light, left there for days with stale water and no food. This is 2016 and why this is allowed to continue is beyond me, and with the power of social media today, few people know about the breed outside Spain.
I can not imagine what goes through their minds when they are handed into a perrera, thrown into cages or corrals with other dogs they have never encountered before. Exposed to other dogs that may carry sickness or disease, fights break out over food for they are fed in hoppers, the strongest survive so many others never eat. It is without doubt a very stressful situation for them. These could be their final days on this earth, for once the perreras are full they have no choice but to euthanise and Podencos are at high risk due to the lack of potential adoptions.

From Perrera to Finca Podenco Friends, Murcia – meet Perla
Bev Farmer tells the story of Perla.
Perla arrived on Friday 35d July 2015 and we have given her some space but yet another Podenca terrified out of her mind. This is not fear from a change of circumstances, this is from a deeply rooted sustained abuse of some type. She will need many months of help and support to break her out of this world of terror she lives in.
In the last 3 months we have taken in 5 podencos all very similar issues and it cant be just because they are nervous by nature. Dogs learn by association the positive and the negatives and if treated badly for long enough, establish what hurts them is to be avoided.

Podencos and cats
Some podencos live happily with cats, so I would like to share with you these wonderful photos to illustrate this. BUT care should always be taken when introducing the two species. Thank you to Bev Farmer, Natalie van Noten and Flavia Schwarz-Greiter. (Please do not resuse pix without the permission of these ladies)

All Podencos should enjoy life
From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends, Murcia
This video is to say thank you to everyone for believing in us and allowing us to realise our dream. A year of a thousand tears and a million smiles. Times when we were overwhelmed and it all felt too much…. then those magic moments when anything seemed possible. So many of you have reached out and helped in so many ways without you we could not have achieved so much for this forgotten breed of Spain.
Together we saved so many … together we gave them a future. We will never ever be to able to express how grateful we are to each and every one who supported us
