  • Sad reality of life in Spain for Podencos – report from Zamorra

    The cruelty of the Spanish hunter knows no bounds. I shed so many tears at the stories which arrive in my inbox every week. This story is about Alma, just been rescued and now under the care of Scooby at Zamorra and their vet. Cobie explains.

    ‘The sad reality for a podenca, a hunting dog of advanced age that no longer “served” and that was found in a state close to dying, completely starved and without any energy to be able to stand up, with severe wounds all over her body, inflicted by beings full of hate and anger and without scruples or feeling.

    ‘This is Mamma about a year and a bit old the amazing wonderful girl that we rescued after we found her feeding three different sets of puppies only two of them hers, she is now ready to go to a new home she is without a doubt a wonderful dog she is well mannered loving eager to please and she gets on well with other dogs.

  • Update on Podenca Vida – beaten and dumped to die

    Valencia Vida 170 10 2 2014This beautiful little podenca is Vida today – remember her battered body when she was found in a bag in a rubbish bin in a village of Valencia. You will be delighted to know that she is recovering very well.

  • Toledo – young podenco found in rubbish bin, badly beaten

    3rd February 2014 – Toledo – hell-hole for galgos and podencos – in a village of Toledo. Podenco puppy found in a rubbish bin inside bag with a strong blow to the head, gored and hypothermic. Taken to the vet for emergency treatment. Prognosis awaited. Have asked for updates (if it survives) and if it was in Fuensilada, Motril, where the beaten and shot podenca was found last year.   • Podencos Ria and Inca – finding forever together in Italy

    Alicia Andrews the girls 250Alicia Andrews lives in Italy and has two rescued podencas. She is now involved in helping to rehome podencos, especially from Lanzarote, Canary Islands. She tells the story of how she became involved with the podencos.

    ‘When my last remaining dog died back in January 2013, he left a huge hole in my life. I’ve loved animals from the time I was born into a household where there were always rescued dogs and birds around. So when Peanut left me to run over the rainbow bridge and join his mother and siblings (or, at least I like to think that he did), I felt “lost”. Who was going to leap excitedly around my legs when it was time for a walk?

  • Valencia podencos – discarded like trash in the perrera

    It’s obvious that the hunting season in Spain is now drawing to a close. Perreras overflowing with hunting dogs, podencos, galgos, pointers…as well as thousands of other beautiful dogs – young ones, old ones – confused as to why they have been dumped. Podencos are used in very large number for hunting particularly in Valencia and the high kill perrera is overflowing. Below are some of the poor souls there, including 2 taken by the hunter himself, so can be killed any day, and a couple born in 2005 obviously used for breeding.

  • Sun, sea and accommodation in Lanzarote, Canary Islands

    The Kennel Club Lanzarote perrera Red 250Laura writes from The Kennel Klub, Lanzarote, Canary Islands.

    ‘Lanzarote is a small island and we have a very limited area in which to re-home dogs. Unfortunately that does not mean of course that dogs are not abandoned. We are a legally registered association and in the nearly 18 months we have been running we have re-homed 107 dogs.

    We don’t have a refuge and save many dogs from the perrera, which means they go into kennels before going to foster homes or lucky enough to be adopted.

  • Podenca Pepa

    Pepa podenca 250 18 1 2014A young podenca called PEPA, who appeared this week in Tudela. One of her legs was injured and inflamed. She has their legs has a stroke and inflammation. She’s had vet treatment and medication to get the inflammation down. She is currently in a residencia and the rescuers go every day to care for her. She is very nervous and needs a foster home where she could socialize and learn to trust people.

    We need help to pay her vaccinations, chip, neutering, etc.

  • Podencos from Mairena, Valencia, off the street….

    4 Podencos rescued from Mairena with LASA and needing help with vet fees, food, and a very sick podenca bitch rescued off the street in Valencia. Mesquegossos association need help with vet fees for her.She has an agressive form of scab and anemia. She was tested on Mediteranean diseases and came back negative! She now has a long way ahead of treatments against the scab. She will go to a foster home, get good high protein food and rest. And Gala in Valencia too. Please help if you can.

  • The Invisibles – every home should have one!

    Bebe and galgos 250I’ve been writing and publicising about the podencos for several years, since I started helping a French rescue association bring galgos and podencos from Spain to France for rehoming. I’ve fostered many and helped rehome them too, plus adopted one of my own, seen here with my galgos.

    In general the galgos get more publicity because of the huge numbers abandoned every year, especially hung in the olive groves. But life in Spain for the podencos was and still is no different, just not in quite such huge numbers. And life for the podencos on the Spanish islands got and gets very little publicity atall. Which is why I have worked to help them too.

    The podencos used to be called ‘The Great Forgotten’ but in the last couple of years there has been an ‘explosion’ of interest in podencos, mostly through publicity on facebook.
