  • Podencos in Spain – a hard life on the streets

    Elena Madrid pods 250 3Two heart -wrenching stories from Spain – starving podencos needing help.

    We have called them Alba and Maya – two podencas have appeared in a very bad situation on the streets of a small village in Madrid, Fuentidueña de Tajo. Skinny and dying, hardly able to stand up.

    A very good friend of Elena Alonso, who gives her whole life to animals,found them and took them into the car, People were just walking by ignoring them.

    They are two young female pods, full of tiks and stunned by fear. Nevertheless, they aren’t able even to eat anything. They can barely stand up!

  • Podenco Friends in Murcia – saving the podencos

    I shed tears every day as I read the appeals for help for podencos – old, young, abandoned, in the perreras – puppies with a whole life before them, susceptible to disease in the perreras. The appalling waste of life, simply because most of the Spanish hunters don’t care…Luckily thousands of the younger Spanish generations DO care and do as much as they can to help. So many appeals come in that I simply can’t post them all.

    And we can’t help them all until the ones in shelters and kennels are found loving forever homes. The podencos need your help. Please share their story.

  • Podenco Orito puppy Rania in Almeria perrera

    Almeria Rania 170 27 4 2014I’ve not been posting appeals to save the hundreds of podencos in perreras because the podencos already saved desperately need forever homes. But I had to tell you about Rania, an 8 month old Podenco Orito puppy on death row in Almeria perrera. The Orito is one of the more unusual type of Podenco, mainly found around Malaga province. You can read more about them on this link. Rania shouldn’t be in the perrera! It will cost 135 euros to buy her out (as she is over 6 months old) and then 90 euros/month for a kennel.   • Ciudad Real, Almeria, rescued podencos urgently need forever homes

    La Bienvenida Sorbet 250 4 2014Two appeals for help – forever homes urgently needed for these beautiful young boys.

    Sorbet is with Protectora La Bienvenida shelter in Ciudad Real, 200km south of Madrid. I visited it in 2007 when I collected my first galga Karmel. He is an affectionate podenco, gets on well with other dogs, walks well on the lead, clean in the house, ready to be adopted. Contact labienvenida@hotmail.com

  • Cordoba, Spain today – the reality – Podenco puppy – bait for fighting dogs

    Badol burned face 1709th April 2014 – Spain today, a place where animals are tortured and abused.

    This is Badol. He is a podenco puppy who appeared on the street of a small village in Andalucía. The vet thinks he was used for sparring with pittbulls as he has bites on him, and then was burnt. Escaped or dumped, no one knows, but he wandered the streets in this condition for a few days before he was rescued. Nuria Martín Barcos has the shelter La Guarida in Córdoba. She always does a great job. She is an exceptional person. She has more than 200 dogs. Badol, the puppy, is now at the hospital, under the care of the protective Puente Genil.
