  • Anyone room for these podencos – help save them

    Adaana pod 2 250 1 2014Adaana have been asked to take thes two podencos but they don’t have room. Can anyone else help?

    Two photos of other podencos in need, which we would like to help, but for whom we’ve got no place in this moment. I send you their photos just in case with promotion they achieve to get a definitive family, a foster home, or godparents.

    The brown and white one is a female who is going to eat to a private property which has no fence. The place is in a dangerous area because it has highways and roads very near. She’s got a big wound in one of her back legs but it doesn’t look very infected and bones seem to be ok (she walks placing it down correctly).

  • ACTIN on Perreras – making money out of killing dogs

    Viv Wharton of ACTIN recently learned of a case where a pet dog was taken by the dog collector and ended up in the local perrera. Luckily the owners headed there as soon as they realised their dog was missing, and reclsimed it. What if this is happening in thousands of Perreras in Spain?

    Viv writes. ‘There is a recession, little money for anyone, let alone Perreras and animals are the bottom of Spain’s list of priorities!! The council run ones get paid for every dog brought in and now many volunteers pay to get them out.

  • Podenca Jasira in Murcia – lucky to be alive

    ‘I see so many Podencos in so many terrible situations. I see them by the roadside badly injured, having been hit by a car and left to die. I see them wandering the countryside, emaciated and very often with broken limbs. I see them with their spirits all but destroyed from having been incarcerated in a perrera.

    After this amount of exposure to such horrific sights, it’s hard not to begin to accept this as the norm here in Spain. Most of our rescued podencos require a lot of care to bring them back to good health, both physically and mentally.

    But now I have seen something which shook even me to the core. I have seen some terrible sights but this has to be one of the worst.

  • Pepis Dog Refuge – their Xmas Day present from above!

    Pepis bedroom window 1 250 12 2013These are the pictures of Pepis Dog Refuge on Christmas Day 2013, the day after we left after our visit to Jane and Alan and all their beautiful dogs.

    This has never happened before on Christmas Day, complete devastation, very strong winds and torrential rain. After moving the dogs in the house from the ground floor to the upper floor for safety, which as you can see was fast filling with sewage water, to the upper floor.

    As the forecast is for more storms tomorrow, we went up to the caravan and found the shed had been completely devastated, with all the expensive electronic equipment which ran our limited solar electricity and all Alan’s electric tools in thick mud and water. The solar we did have has now been destroyed and the solar panels were blown into the olive tree.

  • Little Pod Association – working in Murcia for the podencos

    LPA Angela logo 300Some years ago I received a photo of a little podenca puppy held by the scruff of the neck, feet off the ground, in a perrera for killing! I circulated the photo and details to contacts and ‘angela’ as she became known, was rescued and went into foster with Angela Stacey. Sadly Angela pod developed the killer disease parvo virus and died but she touched the hearts of so many people that Angela and her daughter Marie formed Little Pod Association.

    They have been doing amazing work rescuing and fostering and organising adoptions for dozens of podencos especially in the Murcia area. On this page you can see some of the fabulous podencos in their care, waiting for forever homes. Please contact them as they rely on donations to carry on their work. And please consider LPA if you have room for a podenco in your heart and home.

  • SARA Lanzarote – saving the podencos in the Canary Islands

    SARA Janubio 170 12 2013To animals, every day is the same, there are no fete days, bank holidays, Easter, Christmas. Their main concern is a warm bed, food and fresh water, and caring hands. Many people will have whizzed off to the Canary Islands for Christmas in the sun – spare a thought for all the volunteers working to look after all the abandoned and rescued dogs – specially the podencos – most of whom will spend their lives in a refuge unless they are adopted abroad.

  • Injured Valencia podenca and puppies – safe now with Podenco Friends

    Bev Valencia pod pups 250 1 12 2013Saved just in time. Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends tells the story of this mamma podenca and her puppies, living rough with freezing temperatures at night. She has been named Alexa.

    ‘The team in Valencia have caught her and are on their way down to Murcia, the bad news is she has been badly injured. Deep lacerations down her side and one of her breasts ripped open, they think she has been attacked by a wild boar. We have had to make the decision to take the mum now she needs urgent medical care and people are still in the area looking for the pups. Our vets are on standby ready to operate on her.

  • Stunning Podenco Ibicenco with Podenco Friends – for adoption

    Bev Sonny 250 12 2013And another new addition at Podenco Friends – a gentle giant.

    ‘We had another arrival. Sonny travelled from Cadiz, a big beautiful Ibizan Hound just over a year old. He was found abandoned a few months ag,o sadly the foster family could no longer keep him so Karen Dunn of Tika stepped in and prepared him for adoption.

    Sonny has an eye condition known as uveitis resulting from a trauma to the eye and started treatment for it some time ago. At the moment he still having treatment and it is possible the eyesight in that eye will be compromised. We will continue with weekly veterinary checks and our vets are in consultation with the clinic that treated him before.

    Taking that all aside Sonny only been with us for 24 hours and has the most wonderful temperament, very easy going and a big hit with the girlies here. For adoption please email us at podencofriends@hotmail.co.uk

  • Urgent appeal for podencos in Tenerife

    Tenerife Tierra Blanca 250 13 12 2013Regular readers will know I always mention the refuges in the Canary Islands and the podencos there whose main hope of a forever home is on mainland Europe. Now there is terrible news from of the shelters.

    There has been torrential rain in Tenerife and the refuge Tierra Blanca has suffered badly with flooding. If anyone would like to help a podenco to have a shelter from the elements, below is more information and an translation from María Isabel Padilla Peraza vet and manager of Tierra blanca.

    We currently have over 130 Podencos in our patio area , an open area that has been devastated by rain. Right now we are constructing the area , but besides building costs we need funds to buy shelters.
