This lovely podenco is Nino, he’s 6 years old. Silvia says Nino has been a long time at GalgoConnectionSpain kennels. He is a sweet podenco, loves other dogs and people. Surely there is someone out there for him. Contact Silvia if you have a place in your heart for him.

Alicante area – 2 podencas needing help
These two podenca bitches were found alont the Aspe-Crevillente road, Alicante. They have no collars or chip. The people who rescued them have 3 dogs already and can’t keep these podencas much longer. If no shelter or asso can take them, they will be taken to the pound. Please help. As regular readers know, I remind people about the podencos on the Canary Islands who have a terrible life with the hunters and whose main chance of a forever home is on mainland Europe. Here’s a heartbreaking story about a shelter on Tenerife. Please help if you can.
Marisa Traen’s refuge (Refugio de la Esperanza del Sur) with her many Podencos has to move!
The new piece of land has been found, but is not ready yet to receive the many animals!! And now the council of Adeje announced a few days ago, that the property where they still are, has to be cleared before the 8th December!! (supposedly for promoting the place with hotels) and that the 89 dogs will be put to sleep if they are still there on that date!

Montserrat, Valencia – 8 months old with a neck wound
ISIS is a podenquita that appeared abandoned in Montserrat. She had a wound on the neck as if she had been chained up all the time. She is about 8 months, honey-colored eyes, is very sweet and affectionate and gets along well with other dogs. The wound has healed with treatment each day and now she needs a family who will offer her a forever home. At such a young age, she has many years ahead of her; young enough to train, maybe even make an agility dog. She is in Valencia.
She will have a contract, commitment of sterilization and follow-up

The situation in Spain for the galgos and podencos remains desperate. Every day I receive appeals for help to get dogs out of perreras or abandoned and living on the streets. It seems to me that the galgueros are hanging fewer dogs and simply dumping them and expecting the refuges and rescue associations to take them in. They continue to dump their dogs at the gates of refuges too – tied up overnight for the volunteers to find the following day. -

Jennifer says ‘Apart from his only ‘sin’ of going into hunting mode in the presence of a cat (well, that’s no different from lots of dogs, mine included!), he is the most friendly, gentle, agreeable loving boy I have ever come across. Would make an excellent family dog, great with children, horses and other dogs. Seems he has been registered with 4 different hunters so he obviously wasn’t a good hunter and was eventually thrown out to fend for himself.
He has survived very well and shows no signs of psychological trauma – so no ‘issues’ to deal with. He loves a good walk and then is content to curl up on the sofa for much of the day, another wee walk later in the day and that is him sorted.’

Podenco Orito x Toribio desperately needs his forever home
The Podenco Orito is not as common a type as the Andaluz, Ibicenco and Canario, so here is a story about an Orito X who desperately needs a forever home. He’s called Toribio. His rescuer is desperate to find him a forever home and she has done everything for him to make him ready for travel. Despite spending 2 years living rough he is negative for all diseases and is a typical loving podenco cross who wants to please and is very loving. He is house trained, castrated and vaccinated. He has a large scar on his neck which is healing well. His rescuer tells his story.
‘This little boy showed up at our house few weeks ago. Since then he made a real progress. From a shy, tired boy he has turned into a loving family friend. It’s amazing really since he has a terrible life.
He has a chip. Our vet called the owner who said he didn’t know what we were talking about ( what dog? what color?). Eventually the owner remembered that he had a dog a few years back but gave it to his friend – a hunter, who 2 years ago told him Toribio was shot during a hunt and died.
NO COMMENT!!!
The facts are:
-the owner doesn’t care about him and doesn’t want him back (he put it in writing so no issues for someone to adopt him)
-the dog has a monster scar on his neck from a chain (the pink line on his neck where the collar grew into his skin)
-he must have been wondering the streets for the last 2 years
-the dog was in a terrible state, exhausted, full of fleas and with an ear infection
IMPORTANT NOTE: He is NOT GOOD with cats.
Toribo deserves so much better!!!
He is a loving boy: great with people, craving human touch, good with dogs, walks nicely on a lead, amazing in a car, fantastic at the vet! Trust me when I say he will make a wonderful family pet and if not for the fact we already have two dogs, he would stay with us forever, we just don’t have the room for another.
He was born in 2007, he is 16 kg and 45 cm. He is podenco orito x, dark chocolate brown – a really handsome boy.
He had a bit of TLC at the vet: nice shower,ears cleaning, pills to kill the fleas, deworming & general check up. He was so brave and didn’t complain at all
.
All blood test done: Toribio is one healthy boy, NO Heartworm , NO Leishmania , NO Ehrlichia cani.He has been castrated and vaccinated.
He will stay with us a little bit longer, but if we don’t find anyone who can give him a forever home we will need to take him to the shelter.

Chiclana, Cadiz – abandoned podenco puppies
These 3 podenco puppies now named Bonnie, Rosie and Tyler were abandoned in Chiclana, nr Cadiz, on 27/10/2013. They are about 6 – 8 weeks old and very healthy, lively puppies.
