  • Abandoned Valencia Podenca – now safe with Little Pod Association

Podenca with tumour 250 1 10 2013This poor podenca was living in the streets of a village near Valencia, and a girl was feeding her. An appeal was made for someone with room to take her and Little Pod answered. The poor podenca was wandering the streets carrying this extra baggage – a hug tumour. She has been named Eva.

She was caught and taken to the vet where she was kept in under observation over the weekend. They will operate today (14/10), but there are many complications. They will do an ultrasound to check for puppies but they have to do an x-ray too. There are 2 more tumors and she will have to have her whole mammary canal removed which will take 3 operations. They can’t spay her at the same time so she will need a 4th operation.

  • Rescued Podencos in Murcia – podencos for adoption

To spend some time with Bev and Warren and all their foster podencos in Murcia – well, a few are permanent residents – was a fabulous experience. I offered to help with the dogs but they were organised, they had their routine, so I did as I was told! Walking on the campo with Bev and the young hounds, watching her training them on recall was fabulous.

  • Almeria building site – rescue of two abandoned podencos

Bev Neo Dallas building site 250 10 2013These two podencos were abandoned on a building site in Almeria. Appeals went round and Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends said she would have room – as 4 dogs were leaving to go to their forever homes. But Almeria is a long drive from Alicante so she arranged with the young rescuer to meet up part way.

Bev says. ‘Early start tomorrow after making sure our four are safely on their way on the transport taking them to their forever homes. Then we will be driving down to Almeria to get these 2 Podencos left abandoned in a construction site.’

Bev and Warren got the two podencos safely back to home base. Here’s what Bev writes about their rescuer.

  • Good news for some pods – don’t forget the pods in Murcia needing homes

Things are a bit hectic here as I’m desperately trying to get the Italian translation of my galgo book onto the Internet to sell as an ebook before the end of the month. Scooby Italia have a big conference, Fermin is going, and my translator Daisy has been asked to speak. So I need my book ready to sell!

I’ve had a few appeals in this week for help for podencos but before I had chance to post them, I’ve had news that the dogs have been saved by different organisations. I’m away again for another couple of days – this time not dog related! – but will be back on line again at the weekend. In the meantime – Bev Farmer has all those fabulous podencos in Murcia who need forever homes.

  • Small Podenco Andaluz Odie on Valencia perrera death row…

Valencia perrera Odie 190 10 2013This terrified little Podenco Andaluz is in Valencia perrera to be killed.

Odie is a small beautiful podenco only a year old and has already suffered much. He has an intense colour like a Sun at sunset and in addition a finesse and elegance that leaps to the eye. He is so scared now… but when he knows he is loved there will be only light and love, and he will be a friend forever.

  • Podencos in Murcia waiting for forever homes

Solo shade 1 250As usual, my recent visit to Spain was full of action and, even better, rescued dogs! You can read about my visit to ACTIN on this link. From there I spent a couple of days with Bev and Warren and their 26 podencos at the finca they recently moved to. Most of the podencos are waiting for their forever homes, including Solo and Carina. Little puppy Sky and his best buddy Rembrandt already have adoptions arranged, as does Dave and little Maneto Lily. Please contact Bev if you would like more information on her podencos. She will shortly have a website where you can see them all.

Enjoy this video of some of the podencos at play.

  • Sighthounds 2 Save, Belgium – helping the galgos and podencos

Sighthounds 2 Save 200Regular readers will know that I often publicise the plight of the podencos on the Canary Islands, where their only hope of a forever home is on mainland Europe. Sighthounds 2 Save was created in 2008 and besides helping the Irish Greyhounds and Spanish Galgo, they work on rehoming the podencos of Tenerife and Lanzarote.

  • Podenco Canario, Maneto, Enana, Andaluz and more…

This is an article I wrote a few years ago which first published on Galgo News – before I created this blog Podenco Post – from when the podencos have gone from strength to strength.

  • Arca Sevilla and Julio – the tale of a little podenco puppy

Arca Sevilla Julio01 190 8 2013This is the tale of a little podenco puppy called Julio, because he was found injured by the roadside in Seville in July 2013, saved by Arca Sevilla.

The story of Julio is like many other hunting dogs. When not used for hunting, are not responsive to the expectations of the hunter, they are abandoned to their fate. And their fate is often very poor. So Julio, a young podenquito, just a puppy, probably not starting out as a hunter like his owner wanted, he was alone and abandoned. Looking for life as he could, through fear, hunger and thirst, more thin, more damaged, more suspicious of all … one day, do not know when or how but he suffered an accident and his front leg was seriously damaged. Then came the pain and infection. In these conditions her would soon have died, anonymously, like many others before him.
