  • SARA Protectora, Lanzarote – saving dogs

    SARA Protectora clavel 170 9 2013The Canary Island podencos have a very hard life and here’s just one example. Meet Clavel, or Carnation in English. Here is what SARA say.

    Clavel is the name we have given to this little male podenco, which the owner brought to our premises on the order of Seprona, who went to the house to process the complaint. They ordered that the dog be taken to our kennels to be treated and of course to be found a new home. The owner knew that the eye had been bad for a long time and that as of course it hadn’t been treated, the eye just exploded, with all the suffering that entails.

    It was necessary to remove the eye and now he is recuperating from the operation.

    Thank you to Seprona for taking action for this little dog and bringing him to us so that he can be treated.

  • Cheap accommodation on Lanzarote –

    Lanzarote Orlando 250 9 2013This young podenco is Orlando, thin and terrified in the perrera on Lanzarote, due to be killed next week. I’ve asked SARA Protectora if they can save him and there are appeals on facebook too. Fingers crossed.

    There have also been a few podenco puppies in the killing station in Valencia, Mairena (Seville) and Almeria. In the past few months more people have finally realised what I and Podencoworld (Holland) have been saying for years – that the podencos need help just as the galgos do. Facebook is an excellent medium for sharing the appeals to save the podencos and I’m pleased to report that, beside Pedro the injured podenco, several puppies have also been saved from death through appeals on facebook. BUT they all need forever homes, which can take longer.

  • Mogan, Gran Canaria, Mairena, Sevilla – podenco puppies in perreras!

    Gran Canaria Janis Luke 250 9 2013And more podenco puppies. Janis and Luke are in the municipal perrera in Mogan, Gran Canaria. As regular readers will know, the main hope for adoption for podencos on the Islands is in mainland Europe. At the moment the contact for these two babies is the perrera. However, the main animal rescue association on Gran Canaria is TARA and it could be they would help if someone wanted to get the puppies out for adoption. Naturally there would be fees to pay, including flights from the Island.

  • Valencia perrera – time running out for a young podenco

  • Mojacar, Almeria – accommodation wanted

    Paws Patas puppies 250 8 2013The nightmare for volunteers in Spain working in dog and cat rescue. How does one cope with this sort of pressure? Paw-Patas – 32 puppies, 3 adult dogs dumped in 14 days. The only positive is that they were dumped at the shelter. If you can help either with donations for food, vaccinations etc, or best of all adoption, please contact Paws-Patas direct.

  • Tenerife, Canary Islands – life behind the sunshine and beaches

    Regular readers will know I frequently highlight the maltreatment of the podencos on the Canary Islands. They have a terrible life and their only real chance of a forever home is on mainland Europe.

    Evil metal snares are often used in woods and forests and sadly the podencos get caught up in them. The picture below is an illustration of one such case. This female Podenca was found like this in the forest in La Esperanza and is now in Valle Colino shelter in La Laguna, Tenerife. They think her leg has been cut by a trap… She now urgently needs a foster or a forever home. Contact a.vallecolino @ hotmail.es
