  • Podencos in Need Scotland – join in the fun!

    Podenco play school 2 400I received a request from a Podenco adopter living in the Edinburgh area who wanted to meet up with other podenco people to share knowledge, experiences etc. Pam Mcleod of Podencos in Need Scotland got in touch with me to tell me about the Dog Play School in the area. Here’s the story of how it came about.

    ‘2 years ago I spent the day with 500 dogs in the perrera Tierra Blanca on Tenerife, and so the dream was born. I met Pacita, who, at 11 years old, had been found, heavily pregnant, caught and brought into the perrera, only to deliver 9 pups the following day, all but 2 of whom died to parvo virus. Pacita was still distraught at losing her pups and my heart broke for her. I met Pasha and Nico as well as many nameless hounds and fell in love with them all.

    The next month was spent on a vertical learning curve about the practicalities and logistics of rescuing a dog from another country, and getting together the funds to fly Pacita from Tenerife to Edinburgh. Flying Fleeces was born to help raise funds and, after we got her home in February, PINS was born and, with it, the mission to make Scotland, Podenco-Central.

  • Vero – podenco rescued from the highway

    This is a short video of little Vero, which I took on my visit to Pepis Dog Refuge in September 2016. Jane Brian received a call from her vet that there was a puppy injured in the village of Pedrera and could the refuge take him. I went with Jane to collect him from the vet surgery and here he is in the ‘hospital’, plucking up courage to come outside to play! He now has his forever home in the UK, named Dobby.

    This is one of the many cases Jane and Alan deal with every week and why we continually need to donate and raise funds to pay the vet bill. Here are some ideas which you could do to raise funds and awareness and how to donate.

  • Podenca Bety – fell or was thrown from an apartment block

    Betty 400 1 6 2017This is Spanish dictionary translation of a story which appeared in a Tenerife paper last month. It’s a story all too common for the podencos of the Canary Islands.

    No one wants to take Betty, the dog who fell from a window

    To Betty, they don’t want to adopt it. The belief that it is only a dog away from the homes and apartments of individuals, not hunters, not taking into account that the podencos as Bety remain dogs. Not so furry or ‘monkeys’ as others, but just as caring and faithful.

    Bety was abandoned by her original owner, a Hunter in the upper area of La Victoria, one month ago at the Teide. I didn’t want it. “It’s a dog’s shit that is useless.” After roaming a place like Las Cañadas, where she was just thrown scraps, she was found by a neighbor of the calle Heraclio Sanchez of the lagoon.

  • Podenca Podengo in Portugal – looking for a forever home

    Portugal Laika 400 7 2017Laika is a pretty little Podenca Podengo who has been given to the Dogs of Portugal association because her hunter is going away. She is a similar size (6/5kg) to my little Podenca Andaluz Bebe – a little dog with a huge character! Read about Laika on this link and contact the association if you can offer her a forever home.

  • Podencos at Pepis Dog Refuge, Pedrera, Seville – desperately looking for forever homes

    Tammy 400There are many podencos and podenco X dogs at Pepis – some have been waiting years for a forever home – they have been looked after and loved by Jane and Alan and the many volunteers who help there. Please have a look at them and consider giving them the rest of their lives with a home, rather than a kennel

  • Update on the 18 Gran Canaria podencos

    Here’s a report from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends who has already got a couple of the rescued podencos on the ‘reserved for adoption’ list when their passports etc are in order.

    ‘Another terrible situation on Gran Canaria working together with Salva un Podenco g.c we are taking 4 adults and 4 puppies they are safe.

    Whilst on our visit to Gran Canaria we were made aware of a another bad situation in Santa Brigida 17 Podencos and one mixed breed held in terrible conditions.

  • Podenco Ibicenco Kimi in Chiclana, seeking a forever home

    This is Kimi, a Podenco Ibicenco who had a terrible start in life, now hoping there is someone with a loving home for him to share for life. ‎Verixi Souto of the rescue association tells his story.‎

    History: Kimi came from nowhere. He came hungry, malnourished, dehydrated, wounded, sick…

    Kimi is one of so many innocent victims of insensitive hunters, who know how to kill an animal, who shoot and and abandon them to a slow death the one to whom they should be grateful.

    Kimi roughed it, he didn’t even have food. Although sick with leishmania for which he has been treated, he is a noble dog, with green eyes and a tender look, handsome and would be the faithful friend of the person who would adopt him.

  • Axarquia Animal Rescue, Malaga – Podenca Bella looking for a forever home

    Axarquaia Bella 400 2Meet Bella, a female podenco, born 1 January 2012. Bella was adopted from Axarquia Animal Rescue to a forever home in the UK, but her owner is unable to care for her any longer so we are desperately looking for a foster or forever home for her, preferably in the UK.

    This beautiful girl is spayed and has up to date vaccinations, microchip and passport.

    Before being rescued, Bella had been living rough in the campo in Spain with her litter of 9 pups. Despite her unfortunate beginnings, Bella settled remarkably well into a loving home. She is gentle natured, enjoys being in the outdoors and going for walks and is good with other dogs, cats and children. She is medium sized at 19kg, height head to floor 65cm; shoulder to floor 50cm.

  • Black is beautiful – Podenca Laya from Gran Canaria

    Bev Laya 400 6 2017It’s easy to overlook that there are other colours of podencos besides brown & white and chestnut. Here is an absolutely stunning black beauty, now in her forever home in the UK. Here’s her story from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.

    ‘Laya is ready for her journey to the UK, a pamper session bubble bath and pedicure ready for her final journey to her forever sofa. It wasn’t in Sonja or Dave Mills’ plans to add another podenco to their gang but Laya stole their heart and who can blame them, she is adorable.

    Thank you to Migue Quintero for saving this beautiful pup who didn’t have the greatest of starts on Gran Canaria and came so close to losing her life after being in a nasty accident just before she was rescued .. To Soli for been a fantastic foster mum and taking great care of her.

    Together we saved Laya and now she has a future’
