  • Benidorm/Alicante – podenca rescued from the road needs a shelter

    The following message arrived in my Inbox from a lady living in the mountains inland from Benidorm/Alicante. At the moment the podenca is safe but she needs to go to a shelter for an association to help home her. Please contact Gilly if you can help.

    ‘Wwe rescued a podenco from the side of the road a couple of days ago. She looked as though she was injured, we managed to get her into the car and had her checked by our vet. The injury is an old one and has calloused over causing her to limp when walking and leaving her with a big lump on her knee.

    She is young, about 2. Had no problems that the vet could see apart from the healed injury. She has not been blood tested yet but we will get that done as a priority and then get her vaccinated. She deserves more than being in a pen for the rest of her life.

    Is there an association which can take her please.’

  • Podenca Tuesday waiting for a forever family

    This beautiful young rough-haired medium size Podenca Andaluz is Tuesday. She is safe at the moment in Pepis Refuge in Pedrera but she would much prefer to have a forever home. Here’s what Jane says about her.

    Tuesday, female.. Spayed…micro chip and rabies vaccination. Birth date 12/5/2015. Blood tested with certificate. Relaxed nature, although a little nervous when she first meets someone new. Good with other dogs. Not cat tested.

    Tuesday is one of the last remaining dogs at Pepis to be homed, as Jane and Alan Brian, after 13 years of dedicated work, are retiring and are not taking in any more dogs. However, the remaining 9 dogs still need feeding, Alfie injured a leg and the vet bill is already 300 euros, so please don’t stop donating to help.

  • VERY URGENT APPEAL for podencos in Seville

    This is the message sent by a Spanish lady, Ana:

    “AN URGENT CASE OF COMPASSION, please I need help !!!. My neighbor has colon cancer and is always admitted to hospital. He is a widower, he has 6 Andalusian podencos plus 2, this man eats in a social dining room, he does not even have to think and he gives the dogs hard bread. When he is hospitalized for a few days, he asks for voluntary discharge because his dogs are alone and nobody goes to see them or anything. When he arrives the house is destroyed, all full of excrement and an unbearable, convalescent smell. He cleans as he can, he does not even have a bed because his dogs in his absence have destroyed it, well he would need adoptions. Seville capital. If any protector took over, it would be the best”.

    The dogs are all young, vaccinated and wormed but not neutered.

  • Podenco Leo in Valencia – he’s been waiting too long for a family

    The Podenca Andaluz comes in 3 sizes, small, medium and large and also smooth or rough haired. The small ones are like my little pod Bebe, 6.5 kg but with the biggest personality – she bosses all the galgos around. She has very cute ways, loves satsumas (got to keep the orange coat!, is small enough for lap cuddles. I can’t imagine life without her…although I never used to like little dogs! Here is a small podenco who has been waiting far too long for his forever home.

    This is Leo, who came into the PEPA animal charity in October 2015! He is only 7 kilos and is now 6 years old. He is very nervous outside his environment so he needs to go to someone who can bring him on the rest of the way. Please contact Rosemary Macdonald if you have room in your home and heart for this adorable little chap. Don’t let him wait any longer.

  • Podenco friends – podencos for adoption

    ‘Everyone has always answered our call to help sharing our podencos for adoption and we have had great success but again we ask for you help. To find homes in Spain for Podencos is limited so we look to other countries and we ask for your help to share their details as much as possible. This is the lifeblood of any rescue unless people are aware we have so many waiting for their forever sofa they will remain here’.

We have a number reserved due to leave soon and have some waiting to come to us but have come to a position where we can not accept anymore until some are re-homed we just dont have space to take any more in please hit the share button and lets find these their forever homes. Unless stated all of them have been tested negative for Leishmania, Filaria, Ehlrichia, and anaplasma all are sterilised unless they are puppies. Thank you for your support

  • Podenco Friends – meet the pups from the trash bin

    Do you remember this story in January, 4 tiny puppies dumped in a bag in a rubbish bin, who luckily were found and taken to Podenco Friends. Look at them now! Here’s what Bev Farmer says.

    ‘The three pups Aemas, Onni and Lumi happily playing without a care in the world but it could have been so different for them if they had not been discovered. Wrenched away from their mother 4 pups only a few hours old tied in a plastic bag and thrown in a bin, there was a greater force looking out for them that day and they were saved. The pups came to us a couple of days later and had to be bottled fed never the ideal solution but the best we could give them. Sadly Jalo died a few days after, his little body just not strong enough.

    It’s not uncommon to come across pups in this situation especially Podencos as they usually have big litters 10 plus pups. The hunters cull the numbers the day they are born and often it will be the male pups discarded, some will take them to a vet and put to sleep in a humane way. Others won’t put their hand in their pocket and pay, the alternative tie them up in a bag and throw them away in the rubbish. Left there the pups would have died the most horrible death.

  • Pepi’s Refuge – please help with sponsorship for 6 in the UK

    Rachael Lepage of Leash for Life in Trowbridge, UK, has successfully homed many of the dogs which have been in Pepis refuge, some for years. 6 more lovelies have left the refuge today en route for the UK and forever homes. Rachael has sent this appeal, please donate to help her with kennel fees until the dogs are adopted.

    ‘We have 6 dogs now coming from Pepi’s Refuge which will need homing where the owners Jane and Alan Brian have retired and the refuge is closing. Some of these dogs have been there many years. The dogs will arrive by the weekend. At the time we had many offers of help. It’s now D day and as I don’t have a single foster offer on any of them, I’m really left with finding enough sponsors to cover a few days kennel fees for each of them when they arrive. Each dog will be £11.50 per day and they have to by law stay there 48 hours. Is there anyone that’s willing to chip in?     Regular readers – and owners of my book From Pyramid to Perrera – will know that podencos come in different sizes, shapes and colours. This is a tri colour podenco – introducing Marlin.

    ‘Hello, I’m Marlin, 15 months young, a hound Portuguese, 44 cm takk abd weight 8,8 pounds. I’m very social with all dogs, cats and I like people big and small.     ‘Jette aka Daisy (Brown) & Mina alias Jasmina from death in Perrera Valencia urgently searches for a foster. We’ll get the 2 on Friday from killing. They are incredibly scared there, shaking in a pen. We plan a journey between the end of February and mid-March to Germany for both these 2 Hound bitches who are approx. 12 weeks old.
