Just learnt about this association in Cordoba. It is encouraging to me that, since I started my involvement with the galgos and podencos back in 2007, so many new shelters and associations have been formed, so many more people caring for these wonderful but abused hounds.

Galgos Rescue Almeria – a podenco with a special problem
I was recently asked to help a small shelter in Almeria who rescue mainly galgos and podencos. They struggle to raise funds to pay for the many vet fees as most of the dogs arrive with health problems. At the moment there is a galga just arrived and diagnosed witn Leishmania and Ehrlichia.

Podenco Balu with Ann’s Canine Care, Malaga – still waiting and waiting
From Ann.‘It really saddens me that for 2yrs Balu is still with me looking for his forever home. He was offered a home in early February, but this was on condition of a house sale which hasn’t happened. So if you wouldn’t mind, I really need your help to share him for me His best friend Muttley is going to his forever home next week so he’s going to feel a bit lost without him. Balu is such a good dog and deserves so much better. Currently in Southern Spain, but can travel. Totally prepared for adoption, and healthy.’

‘Elderly dogs, with tumors, with Leishmania or extremely thin… When we rescue animals we do it because they need help and because we’re worried about the fate that might await them without it.We don’t choose them for their color, size or age, nor do we care if they’re healthy or sick … We don’t select which dogs to help, we don’t think about whether they’re more or less beautiful or sociable, we don’t even consider if they will be easily adopted or if no one will want to give them a home and they’ll have to spend the rest of their lives with us in the shelter. None of that matters …
In Scooby we are animal lovers and our main goal is to help the ones most in need as they also deserve the best life possible.

Portuguese Podengo Jacinta – deserves a loving forever home
From Dogs of Portugal, such a sad story.‘Jacinta was found on the street, she came to us as a young dog. She was quickly adopted (together with Yuki) and… returned after 3 years. The owners are moving to another country and they say they will live in a small apartment. So they are not taking their dogs with them.
But we realise we should not expect them to care for their dogs. They have neglected them from day 1. When the dogs were returned to us we asked for the books of vaccinations and they said they lost them. “But the dogs were vaccinated!”. We insisted on giving the address of the vet so we could confirm this fact. They indicated “their vet”. The vet is question said they they only saw the dogs once, a few months earlier, when the owners brought them to be euthanized because they were leaving the country. The vet refused to euthanize healthy dogs for that reason. They were never vaccinated there.’
