  • From Lanzarote to Canada – Podenco Martino finally found his forever

    Happy rehoming story from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.

    ‘Martino . 3 years ago this photo just grabbed at my heart a Podenco that was in the perrera on Lanzarote .. This was the 2nd time he found himself in the pound the first time a hunter took him and them when no longer wanted handed him back . Laura Johnson got him out and to safety and when he was ready he flew over to the finca.

    Then Valerie Petterson fell in love with him and he made the flight to Canada . He was 8 years old when he was dumped in the perrera .. 8 years being a loyal servant to his masters. He was the most loving and gentle of souls yet that counted for nothing. All that is the past and he has the most amazing life in Canada. He waited many years but finally found his true family and is very much loved.’

  • Podenca Eire – saved from hanging!

    This is our princess Eire. Eire is a podenquita about 1 year old and 6-7 pounds of weight. She was alone for a while roaming the campo, we were asked to help to rescue this little girl. Wee suspect she may have been hung because she has a huge wound that cuts her all the neck. Of course we took care of her. She has suffered a lot despite how little she is, she looks so helpless that she gave us her soul and is a love.

    We urgently need foster homes in Barcelona and adoptions. There are many podencos we have in our office. And several podencos that we have without sponsors 60 e /month in the kennels for each dog, plus expenses of vets, transport….., we ask you not to be indifferent to our request and for little that you can help us save lives. Eire has no sponsors so she needs some until she finds a foster home or adoption.
    She deserves a chance!

  • From Murcia, Spain – to Alaska, USA – Podenca Africa gets her forever home

    From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends. A story of tremendous effort to rescue a young podenca from the streets and send her on her way to her forever home in Alaska.

    ‘Africa ..rescued from the streets, no life for a young puppy. She left at 2am in the morning from the Finca for the start of her journey to Alaska .. then all checked in at Madrid for the first leg of three flights. She will land in JFK airport, have a few days lay over before her adopting mum flies down to collect her…

    Thank you to Brian and David from Ibizan Hound Rescue for transporting her and helping with checking her in ..To Michael Owens for making this happen who is flying back with 8 dogs to the US and to everyone that has helped and those who will help once they land in the USA. Thanks to you all these 8 dogs now have a future.’

  • Portugues Podengo x – where are her babies?

    Story:

    Sarah was found on the street. Her breast were full of milk. She had puppies recently, where are they? One of the volunteers walked with her for hours in the area where she was found hoping to find her puppies. But no puppies…. Most probably her owner killed the puppies and abandoned her far away from home. Very common. She is not a street dog. She is a dog that had a home. And the puppies were probably born there.
    Poor girl.
    She is very sweet. A bit shy at the first encounter but she wants to trust and she appreciated cuddles. Very gentle, calm, quiet. Really nice girl…. Hopefully her luck will turn.

  • Walking for the Spanish Hounds in Malaga

    ‘This is to show you that although I live in a hunting area, hunting with galgos and podencos, and the abuse they suffer is not condoned by all people in the town. This photo is of a group of ladies that put on a catwalk show to highlight some of the abandoned dogs found in Campillos, and other dogs needing homes. I am 3rd from the left with Mattei, and Suerte is in the centre. Both have gone on to find loving and forever homes.

    So please when you see graphic photos of abused dogs in Spain please take into account that many, many individual Spanish people, charities and groups are trying to help the situation, and they go unnoticed.

  • Podenca Pearl – terrified podenca now safe – what has she suffered?!

    ‘It’s been a busy day and this evening we have another little podenco in our care. I’ve changed her name to Pearl as it is very similar in English and Spanish. And she is a little pearl, she’s very frightened, and apparently an escape artist. But for now let’s see what tomorrow brings. Pearl was rescued by Sos Peludos Comarca Guadalteba Sospcg from a life threatening situation, but had nowhere for her to go.

    First thing to do is have her blood tested, and then prepared for adoption. At the moment I’ve no idea how long it will take to turn her around to a confident young lady, but we will do our best.

  • Regalgos, Perrigalgos, the outcasts of Spain

    ‘The outcasts of the outcasts in the world of hunting – They call them Regalgos in Andalusia and
    Perrigalgos in Castilla.

    They are mongrels whose father or mother is a galgo and they are the ones no one notices. Galgos are easy to place, as more and more people realise what wonderful companions they can be in family. Podencos, although still problematic to place, usually have a size that facilitates their adoption.

    But what about this new category of mix breeds?

  • El Podencos – treasure or trash?

    A national treasure ? or just trash? Bev farmer

    What is about Podencos that incite such passion for them….. for me I see beauty nobility intelligence a creature so unique and magical, those who have adopted one will understand how special and sensitive they are. These should be the national treasure of Spain to be held in reverence to be proud of…. such a truly magnificent creature they should be recognized has part of the national heritage of Spain for they date back to 3000 BC.

    Yet daily we receive more and reports of Podencos abused, abandoned handed in to Perreras. They are viewed as disposable not animals with feelings but working dogs and when no longer useful, discarded with as much thought as we would throw a soda can into a bin. Many are Podenco crosses but they still should be afforded the same respect as the pure bred for the still have the blood of a podenco coursing in their veins.
