  • Ann’s Canine Care – helping the hounds of Spain

    Ann Marie Payne Pearl 400 5 2020
Here’s a story from Ann Marie Payne of Ann’s Canine Care, about a very traumatised podenca she has had for 8 months already and whose journey to trusting humans will be a long one. Little Pearl is in the best of hands for the journey.

‘Earlier today while I was at the desk little Pearl came out of her crate, sneaked behind me and went across the lounge, then she came back into the crate again, she did this a few times, and each time she did it I couldn’t turn my head to see what she was doing, knowing she’d go into panic mode if we made eye contact. After a little while she hadn’t come back to her crate. I was hoping that she’d found the sofa, but sadly no!

I couldn’t see her but, knew she was at the side of the armchair where nobody could see her. I left her there for about an hour and gave her some hot dogs, which she wolfed down when I wasn’t looking. Then I decided to take her out. When we came back inside she headed straight for her crate. Trying to get my head round this behaviour I thought back to this morning. Galga Amy had walked into Pearl’s crate, sniffed her food and walked straight out, and I think that this possibly unnerved her and, she didn’t feel safe there any more.

  • Galgo’s Rescue Almeria – saving podencos and galgos

    GAR podenco 1 400 28 4 2020
28/4/2020 – Today GRA received a call from Pam who had found a podenco and asked for our help.

The dog (female) followed her on her daily walk with her own dogs and was in her garden. Pam gave her food and water, she was calm and seems not really scared. We gave her the name Zita.

This young girl is really skinny and she is covered in ticks. In no time we managed to catch Zita and put her in the car. First she was very quiet in the cage but once we were driving she panicked and we had to stop. The rest of the way to the kennels we did on foot. Once we were at the kennels she relaxed, so we decided to make an appointment at the vet tomorrow morning.

    Update will follow.

  • Podenca Viva – ready to start a new life forever

    From Animal Rescue Granada.

Sweet Viva was found in pretty rough circumstances. She belonged to a hunter who left her behind for a long period of time. Some people threw some food to her once in a while until she was finally rescued from this place.

Viva is very sweet, only a bit timid at first while she gets to know a new home. She is 8 years old, a Podenco mix, great on the leash, friendly with people and dogs.

She is currently in temporary foster care with one of our volunteers and doing very well. But she deserves to find a future home where she can spend the rest of her life. Is that maybe your home?

  • Tripod Podenca Altea with Galgos en Familia – hoping for a forever home

    Galgos en Familia ALTEA_400
Snares are illegal in Spain but some hunters still use them on their private land, with devastating results is the dogs on on the scent! Here’s one such beautiful podenca – now a tripod through no fault of her own. She’s with Galgos en Familia in Malaga at the shelter started by Vera Thorenaar.

Altea has the story of a real survivor. She was wandering for weeks on the streets of a town in CΓ³rdoba with a trap embed in one of her rear paws, while she was shouting in pain. But she was so untrusting in human being that she didn’t let anyone to catch her even known she had so many people trying to. When finally they could rescue her, they took her to the veterinary, who decided the best option for her was to amputate that paw. Now, she is recovering wonderfully in a foster home with one of our best volunteers.

Her temporary family told us Altea is pure love, she is so calm that she doesn’t move from her bed, where she can finally rest without any pain. She loves being covered with her blanket and sleep. With people she is so affectionate, she loves receiving cuddles to feel warm and loved. Also, she is a very clean girl at home.
