‘Dapper my little Mr sunshine dog – My first failed foster. This is his story.
Coming up to Christmas in 2013 Jacqui Ross Last Chance Animal Rescue was trying to get as many dogs out of the pound before Christmas. It was my first introduction to fostering and it was a harrowing time because many dogs were dying of distemper. In one pen Eleanor and Dapper were together, and Eleanor had produced 6 pups. And we think that Dapper was the father. I was fostering Eleanor and the pups and had prepared a bed for them in my bedroom, it was actually my bed as the whole thing lifted up to provide storage underneath. I had adapted the bed so that it would stay up and put a carpet in there and some extra bedding.
So getting back to the pound. We were loading Eleanor and the pups into my car and Dapper started crying, he was so upset. Dapper was going into foster with someone else but we decided that it would be best if he came with me, Eleanor and the pups.
They settled in the bedroom, and the pups were everywhere, they were climbing out of the base of the bed and causing havoc, like puppies do.
Then I noticed that Dapper’s nose was running, so thinking about the pups I brought him into the lounge in case he had something infectious. I got him to the vet and he had pneumonia, and he got really, really ill so quickly. I had to nurse him 24/7 and to make sure he could breathe properly I had to have him by my side most of the time holding his head up to keep his airway open. The gunge coming from his nose was just awful, and I was forever clearing it away. Eleanor and the pups moved on to another rescue that had promised Jacqui they would take care of them, and I don’t think Dapper even noticed, he was that ill.
But Dapper made a remarkable recovery and, had placed himself deep in my heart. I asked Jacqui if Dapper had a home to go to and, she said no. So I asked her if I could keep him, and the rest as they say is history. Dapper became my Mr sunshine dog because her would follow the sun’s rays all day long in the garden. He also became my most valuable asset when introducing new fosters to the household. He would always be friendly towards them, and make them feel at ease. He is such a wonderful loving dog, and I think he’s soooo Dapper
