A year or so back I published a story about a galgo rescued from a ravine by Baas Galgo. This time it’s a podenco stuck down a deep ravine, rescued by Galgos del Sol with the help of a local fireman. Judging from the skeletal condition of the poor hound, he’d been down there a while. Sometimes the dogs fall down these ravines when hunting, but at this time of year…no hunting…looks like his journey there was a different story. Now he’s safe, very tired, recovering with GdS. The fireman named him Moses. Here are the photos of his rescue.

Cadiz podenca needs operation and a home
Look at this pretty little podenco running loose on the streets near Cadiz with a hernia the size of a tennis ball between her back legs! Here is the plea.
‘Fiona, gathered from the street with a herniated belly, help needed for an operation and then adoption! The vet bill is 220 euros and the invoice will soon go up on the blog, link below.
Fiona is a beautiful Podenquita, very affectionate, friendly and sociable with other dogs. She came full of ticks and with a terrible fear. Little by little in a home she will recover from her trauma.

Street life in Seville, accommodation needed
We’re used to pix of bitches with pups on the street in Seville, but not such little puppies, all on their own. 3 x podencos, left in a porch by the street; 2 males and a female. Terrified, of course.
They were collected by a volunteer two weeks ago and she is desperately trying to find foster homes for them. They have a bit more confidence but need more individual work. They need somewhere very enclosed as, still being nervous, they run and hid when startled.

SOS Animals – Podencos for adoption – all of them survivors from Spain
Here are some beautiful podencos with SOS Animals UK & Spain, desperately hoping they will catch your eye and your heart, forever. They are all young, ready to be trained, with full EU passports and bloodtested. Monica is an especially unusual girl, as the Podenco Orito is not a well known type of podenco, unlike the popular Podenco Ibizan and Podenco Andaluz. Guadiamar and Bembezar are brother and sister and have very unusual markings. Gemma came from Operation Rehala where 120 galgos and podencos were saved in January/February. All these super hounds have a survival story to tell. You can see more about them on the SOS Animals website.

SARA Lanzarote Open Day – 21st July 2012
If you are going to Lanzarote or are already there and picking up your emails, please go along to the SARA Protectora Open Day on 21st July 2012. They have dozens of podencos there who need homes, so you could spread the word about them when you get back home!
In addition to the Campaign Against Abandonment, on Saturday July 21 will hold an Open Day where you can come visit us from 10:30 to 17h.
You can come and walk our dogs and being with our kittens, visit the shelter and see how we work, buy things in our market, eat one of our deli food (paella, pizza, tortillas, pie …) and above all, to say NO TO ABANDONMENT!

More podencos suffering in Seville….
Another sad case taken in by Macu, in Seville. Here’s what Macu says – Hello everyone, this is Maya, a podenquita of 12 years old, who has lived her entire life locked up in a shack of a Hunter, only eating muck and being taken out a couple of days a week to hunt. And being used again and again to breed more puppies.
She has a big hernia which someone has tried to sew but it is open again and needs to go to a vet for operation. I can’t photo it because she keeps her tail between her lets and runs away.

Badajoz – abandoned, injured, desperately needing foster and adoption
Another injured podenco no longer wanted by the hunter. Urgently needs a foster or adoption, if any associations can help.
‘Hello I am a perrita of approximately seven months that due to a break of the right paw my proprietor (Hunter) already does not need me,
I am very young but I already have one of my paws fractured, he was forcing me to cover to run and to run and due to the effort that it was doing I broke the sinews…
also I have been hurt by pellets in the body, he did that to make me scare and run faster! -
Podencoworld, Little Pod Foundation – saving a podenco family in Malaga
On 29th June I posted a plea for help for help for a podenco mom and her puppies. Bev Farmer liaised with PodencoWorld in Holland and Little Pod Foundation to save the family. Bev tells the story.
‘I saw the post on Facebook about a Dutch family arriving on holiday in Malaga only to find a Podenco had just given birth to a litter of Pups under the BBQ. They had contacted many of the local refuges but there was no space available and the only other solution was the local Perrera, who advised the family that they would destroy the mum & puppies.

Podenco Vidal – Appel des Levriers find his forever home in France
This photo was of Vidal, a podenco chained up in a disused building. Luckily he was found and rescued. I’ve finally found out what happened to him.
Vidal was chained to a wall, he tried to free his head from the chain around his neck but it got caught in his mouth and he was then left like that as nobody really bothered with him. He then eventually either broke free or he was turned loose. When he began running around the town centre people saw his plight and the town hall was very pro-active in assisting with his capture and getting him a rescue place. He travelled to France where Sandrine, of Appel of Levriers, placed him in a foster home. The family fell in love with him and adopted him. Here’s a photo of him with his friends, and a stuffed rabit which he adores.

Podencas Linda and Maggie – foster and forever homes needed
Two more podencos hoping they will get a forever home. Here are their stories.
‘Linda is just 18 months old and has already suffered at the hands of her cruel hunter owner. Some of her puppies were rescued and got away to homes, but others were killed and now Linda herself is left behind with a very very uncertain future!! It has been known that the hunters return in August to steal the dogs back from the refuge because they are good breeders…….. so poor little Linda could just disappear one day back to her life of horror!
This breed make wonderful pets, gentle, intelligent, playful and adorable. Please contact us if you can help Linda – even if it’s to foster her till we can get her a forever home here in France or even through contacts we have in the UK. Little Maggie is 4 yrs old and weighs 15kgs – so she’s a small medium rough-haired Podenca Andaluz – and she’s an angel we’re told!
She arrived at a refuge in Spain as a tiny puppy and then spent 4 years there, locked up and never knowing life outside her cage – imagine this! She was recently brought out of Spain to a foster home here in France and is now finding out how wonderful life can be! She is slowly learning that people can be kind, food is good and how her gentle, affectionate nature brings out the best in people! She plays with cats, explores her garden, adores walks and to roll in the perfumed lavender, and soaking up the sun in her new found freedom.
Maggie will need another dog for company, an enclosed, safe garden and continuing TLC and patience to fully build up her confidence and trust. To know a Podenca is to love them! Doglinks has a rescued one who was so badly treated we never thought she would ever trust humans again…….. but she has, because this breed is intelligent, but above all kind and accepting, grateful and giving.
