Spain – hanged podencos – hunters’ animal brutality continues

Hanged podencos 250 9 2012The association animalistic ‘Atea‘ has expressed “outrage” at the “gruesome discovery”. 7th September 2012.

The Association for Ethical Treatment to Animals, ATEA, has denounced the appearance, at the end of last August, three dogs who were allegedly hanged and then shot in the vicinity of Txintxetru (Álava), which has been done by filed a complaint in the Central Court, Vitoria

In a statement, the association has expressed “outrage” at the “gruesome discovery”, which was informed a few days after a person find the three dogs hanging from two trees, in an area near the railroad tracks, on the road to Ezkerekotxa, at the junction with San Millán.

As reported, the person who discovered the scene advised the Ertzaintza. At the scene, officers confirmed that the larger animal, a female hound-type-pregnant, had been shot with a bullet cartridge, while the other two dogs, smaller, had been killed with ammunition.

ATEA explained that Ertzaintza investigations reveal that the author “of this atrocious crime” hung first animals and then proceeded to shoot. Furthermore, they found that the dogs had a microchip. In this regard, the association has criticized that “despite the seriousness of the facts – the deliberate killing of three dogs, and also with notorious cruelty -” not aware Ertzaintza from any report being submitted to the Court , “as dictated by common sense and good police practice”.

It was also explained to ATEA the possibility that there could dismiss Ertzaintza sending the required report, ATEA filed a complaint last Wednesday in the central courts, Vitoria.

Criminal Code

For the association, such events are sanctioned by the Penal Code in its article 337 which states that “by any means or procedure unjustifiably mistreating a pet or tamed, causing death or injury which severely damage their health, will be punishable by three months to one year imprisonment and disqualification from one to three years for the exercise of profession, trade or business that is related to animals. “

On the other hand, Atea has denounced “the terrible situation that animals have to endure in rural areas, most seem to live in an independent space of society, with its own rules and standards of conduct, when the reality is that it must undergo the same laws that apply to everyone without exception. ” ATEA has criticized the “contempt” of local officials by protectionist regulations and the “laissez faire” of different police forces.

Finally, Atea has appealed to the public “to not remain passive in the face of any fact that victim is an innocent animal because the only way we will achieve a society truly worthy of the title pompous progressive”.

I think the association should publicize the personal data of the owner and make it available on the internet.
In Hungary there is a website, where personal data of perpetrators (incl. their Facebook contact) are publicized.
The owners of the site obviously do not care about “rights to data protection” as they feel, that criminals do not deserve to be protected.
If the Spanish authorities protect perverse animal abusers then something is very wrong and some action should be taken.
There was for example a cruel dog owner in Hungary who pulled his dog behind his car. It happened approx. 6 years ago (might be even longer ago). The police was a little bit slow for the common taste, so the public took action which means that a couple of people have beaten up the animal abuser privately.
Not ideal of course but when the authorities do not work properly or do not care at all, then what can you do?
In Latin America often happens that people do not wait for the authorities at all, they settle the bill immediately with thieves or murderers. They lynched a murderer lately for the killing of two young schoolchildern.
That is the inevitable end of the road when the authorities fail the people and are not able (or not willing) to enforce the law.

I so like the idea of the public taking action against an animal or child abuser. Sadly in Spain too many people just walk on by, or look the other way. It’s the volunteers who would like to take action, but then, they would end up the targets.

I agree completely with Tunde. Publicize the names and whereabouts of the animal abuser on the internet IF the evidence is correct.
And not only that: Publicize also the name of the local police authority who refused to take action in enforcing the (European) law.
Further: Link these publications to the members of the European Parliament!

Spain – a country so full of culture and beautiful scenery, yet you have a cruel side in the way you treat the beautiful galgos and other animals you are blessed to have. These crimes against animals in Spain will sadly continue to happen as long as no action is taken against those who inflict suffering on innocent galgos and other animals. Shame on all who are in a position of authority and yet do nothing to help the volunteers who do so much to try to rescue injured animals and appeal to them for help.

I absolutely agree with Tunde and Henk !
Maybe that would help to make dog-owners like this one change their behaviour.
Right now those people feel safe, because the authorities don`t do anything, but then they would be in danger after killing their dogs.

It is absolutely horrendous what these poor dogs received and goodness knows how many more. I wish a peaceful protest could be organised in order to bring it to the general public’s knowledge what is going on. I knew nothing about this until I fostered a Podenco and looked them up on the interenet and was aghast. Jacqueline

These poor little souls! What terrible lives and terrible deaths they suffer. It is so sad that not enough people seem to care about the lives of animals. A lynch mob is too good for these cruel barbarians. Spains “culture” is full of brutality and cruelty and has gone on so long they are “immune” to it – even children stand by and watch animals being tortured. If these scumbags aren’t prepared to enter the 21st century then the Earth should be cleansed of them! And to many people sit on the fence and do nothing. It takes sewconds to sign an on-line petition, just a few minutes to write a letter. To do nothing at all makes people as guilty as committing the crime in my opinion and that includes the authorities.
