The podencos of the Canary Islands are Podenco Canario, or Warren Hounds. They have a hellish life at the hands of the hunters, as shown in the video link on this page I published in February 2026.
The Islands are made of Gran Canaria, the largest, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.
It’s easy to forget that the Canary Islands are largely volcanic. In 2021 the La Palma volcano erupted and the animal rescue association Benaware was overwhelmed with saving dogs and cats. Some of the hunters on El Hierro throw their dogs off the cliffs into the sea at the end of hunting!
So many podencos on the Islands wait for years for forever homes. Their main hope is to be adopted on mainland Europe but the costs of sending a dog there are expensive, and they also need flight buddies.

Please contact a Canary Islands association if you can help with donations and forever homes for their podencos. Protectora SARA is one of the larger ones which works on a couple of the Islands. Their website is in Spanish, English and German. Click on the right hand down arrow at the top of the page.
