  • Podenca Ivy in Italy

Ivy garden 250 Italy 7Gabriella shares the story of how she came to adopt Podenca Ivy.

‘I here summarise my love story with Ivy…..

In all my life (I am 57) I have never had a dog. I always preferred cats (at present 3 fantastic cats, 1 Burmese and 2 Burmillas live with me in my apartment…). However, last year, I casually discovered the GACI, an Italian association for the recovery of greyhounds (from Ireland), galgos and podencos (from Spain). In this way I have heard about the destiny of these hunting and running heroes, the way they are fully exploited and, if they are very lucky, abandoned.

  • Podencos – A national treasure or just trash?

Bev Podencos give them a future 250Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends writes.

What is about Podencos that incite such passion for them….. for me I see beauty nobility intelligence a creature so unique and magical, those who have adopted one will understand how special and sensitive they are. These should be the national treasure of Spain to be held in reverence to be proud of…. such a truly magnificent creature they should be recognized has part of the national heritage of Spain for they date back to 3000 BC. Yet daily we receive more and reports of Podencos abused, abandoned handed in to Perreras.

  • Cheap Accommodation on Gran Canaria now available

In February 2014, as a result of a complaint made to Seprona (Society for Protection of Nature in the Civil Guard), a ‘person of Spanish Nationality’ was charged with the crime of abuse and neglect of animals in the village of Vallebron, in the municipality of La Oliva. On his farm were six Podenco Canarios, two already dead, the others were starving. The place also did not meet adequate requirements for the protection of animals.

This is the harsh reality of life for the tens of thousands of podencos living on the Canary Islands. It’s what the tourists don’t see. Please share the story and tell them!

  • SARA Protectora, Lanzarote – saving dogs

SARA Protectora clavel 170 9 2013The Canary Island podencos have a very hard life and here’s just one example. Meet Clavel, or Carnation in English. Here is what SARA say.

Clavel is the name we have given to this little male podenco, which the owner brought to our premises on the order of Seprona, who went to the house to process the complaint. They ordered that the dog be taken to our kennels to be treated and of course to be found a new home. The owner knew that the eye had been bad for a long time and that as of course it hadn’t been treated, the eye just exploded, with all the suffering that entails.

It was necessary to remove the eye and now he is recuperating from the operation.

Thank you to Seprona for taking action for this little dog and bringing him to us so that he can be treated.

If you would like to offer Clavel a loving forever home, contact SARA Protectora.

  • SARA Lanzarote podencos in the UK for rehoming

SARA Chloe 170 10 2012Three fabulous hounds from SARA Protectora on Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Now in the UK for rehoming.

Hello my name is Chloe and I am a 2 year old bitch Podenco Canario with probably something else crossed in although I have been told that this is a good thing as it makes me easier to look after! I came to England from Lanzarote early in 2012 and immediately went into a new foster home, who have shown me how to be a clean girl in the house and make myself attractive to humans! This bit wasn’t difficult as I am very pretty and have a really nice way about me.
