    Did you know Podencos come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and coat types?  In the early days I didn’t. The first podenquito I rescued she was so little I thought she was a puppy ..😊but a welcome surprise and Bella was a real joy to be with ..
    From the petite and delicate to the tall and athletic, this ancient breed is incredibly diverse — yet they all share the same intelligent eyes, expressive ears, and that unmistakable Podenco spirit.
    Despite their physical differences, Podencos are known for their intelligence , loyalty, and gentle nature.
    Whether curled up on the sofa or out exploring the world, they each bring a unique kind of magic.
    And because of their variety, they can adapt beautifully to many different types of homes and lifestyles.

  • Podenca Ruby on Lanzarote, Canary Islands – hoping for a forever home

    I am Ruby and I need to tell you my story.
    I am RUBY, a 7-year-old poodle, and I live in Lanzarote, Canary Islands.  Perhaps some have never heard of podencos.  Perhaps they don’t even know exactly where Lanzarote is.  If you look at a map, you will discover that, although we are in Spain, the Canary Islands are very far from the Peninsula.  Here, many podencos are used for rabbit and quail hunting. The hunting season lasts 3 months and, for many of us, the rest of the year means living locked up, tied up, or in very harsh conditions.
    Our sad fate is very similar to that of the greyhounds on the Peninsula.
    That is why so many associations and projects have been born in Europe that fight to rescue us and find families for us.   But we live on an island, far and isolated. We receive much less help and collaboration than we need.

  • Canary Islands Podencos desperately need forever homes on mainland Europe

    Canary Islands must see places

    The podencos of the Canary Islands are Podenco Canario, or Warren Hounds.  They have a hellish life at the hands of the hunters, as shown in the video link on this page I published in February 2026.

    The Islands are made of Gran Canaria, the largest, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.

    It’s easy to forget that the Canary Islands are largely volcanic.  In 2021 the La Palma volcano erupted and the animal rescue association Benaware was overwhelmed with saving dogs and cats.  Some of the hunters on El Hierro throw their dogs off the cliffs into the sea at the end of hunting!   • Podenco Browny with Refugiocan – foster or adopt

    Browny has been rescued from a ravine, he was next to his dying mother for which unfortunately nothing could be done.
    He is 5 months old and weighs about 5 kilos, he is very very affectionate and needs a home urgently where he is taken care of forever.

  • 1st May – International Day of the Podenco

    May 1st is the International Day of the Podenco, a day to raise awareness and bring to the worlds attention this much forgotten breed. They are not called “Los Grandes Olvidados for nothing and we call on the Podenco community around the world to support this day.

  • Podenca Coco hoping for a forever home.

    Our 12 year old podenca Coco is such a gem. She is sweet and great with other dogs. Towards people she can be a bit shy. Who would like to give this oldie a chance? After 12 years of hunting and having puppies, her last years should be spend on someone’s sofa. She has now gained weight and will be sterilised soon.

    Her suitcases are packed in the hope someone will give this sweet podenca a comfy rest of life.

  • The true face of desolation – old Podenca in the perrera

    The true face of desolation.  Noelia a granny who lived a very hard and unhappy life.  Her little legs are very sore.  So little and cute.
    Weighing only 9 kg.  Only looks for affection since she could never felt anything similar to a caress..She only served to give birth year after year.  She’s 10 years old but it seems like a lifetime of bitterness and pain has taken its toll on her.  You just have to see her, poor thing.

    A perrera, the last place for an elderly podenca abandoned by her hunter who she served faithfully for 10 years!

  • Skin Lesions and Cancer in Dogs

    As a family, we have lost 5 dogs, 1 horse and l cat to different types of cancer.  Lymphoma reared itself as a lump on a galgo’s neck, which had spread.  A sarcoma started bleeding under my horse’s tail.  Cancer developed in my cat’s mouth.  2 more galgos had stomach tumours.

    Weblink to an interesting article on lumps on your dog.  It doesn’t always mean cancer.
