This poor soul is a Podenca Canario which was dumped in a Tenerife perrera by her hunter owner, after a lifetime of producing babies – and starvation. She could barely stand, had a huge abcess on her face and a fever. She is being cared for by the vets of Albergue Comarcal Valle Colino. Once the fever had subsided, the abcess was removed but an inoperatble tumour was discovered on her face.
These are the updates from Ailsa Mcgibney from 9th November. An offer of a comfortable loving home has been made, where Santa, as she has been named, can live out her days.
First night overtaken!!!!! Santa has survived the first night!!!! Today a team of Veterinary will be releasing some pressure of the abscess to make it less painful for her. She cannot eat herself so she is fed with a drip, given antibiotics and calming medicine by iv.
She is also on heat and Monday 10th/11 if she is strong enough and it is safe to do, the vets will do the removal of the molars infected, but it all depends on their evolution, as she will need anaesthetic and in her present condition, it is a risk.
We want to thank all those who are interested in this case and the expressions of support that we are receiving, even from other provinces…
As you can see she is a bag of bones as her owner left like this so they are doing what they can for her but only safely. It is not just the abcess, it is severe malnutrition, age and general neglected condition . Thanks to so many with offers of help but we need to keep her here now and the Kennels and vets will do all they can for her
12/11. Well the Fever has gone so they are happy as this means the infection under controls She still is not eating but they are feeding nutrients via IV drip, they still have a lot of work and still to remove the molar teeth , This picture though shows how thin she has been left to get from what looks like a well built dog. They will update as soon as they can . They are please the fever stopped though ,
Update 13/11 Well the Tumour on her chin is too far gone and inoperable. Santa is stabilised and not in pain plus eating a little. She has an offer of a home where she will be living if she stays stable at the vets and will go to be warm and comfortable, surrounded by people who love her and care for her deeply. Sadly the vets say it was just to late for her. They thank all for support and good wishes.
We in the Canary Islands are just the same as Spain re the Podencos but for small islands the numbers of these cases are horrendously high, kennels full of abandoned dogs and it’s so hard on a small Island to find good homes. Most stay in Kennels for years or in other managed ones get put down. We all must be aware of the plight in all countries to raise awareness and maybe hope for laws to change

you poor little soul oh I am thinking of you sweet heart please fight and stay with us even for a while so you can see what it feels like to be loved for once in your heart breaking life I hope this person gets the max for letting her suffer like this and dumping her in a horrid place just to wait for her life to be ended I bet in not so nice way
This is so very sad, poor baby, she must be in so much pain. I can’t imagine what kind of a revolting individual would let a dog get in such a state. So sorry that is too late for her and thank you to the wonderful people who saved her and will make sure she spends what is left of her life in warmth and comfort. Bless you little one.
So sad to say that Santa gave up her fight for life – she was just too weak and ill – and she has now passed over the rainbow bridge. But at least she knew gentle hands and words and caring people in her last days. The owner is being prosecuted.
Poor little thing, so sorry. I am glad that the owner is being prosecuted, horrible individual.
