  • Guimar, Tenerife, Canary Islands – calling for the end of animal abuse

Canary Islands animal abuse handshake 400 3 2017Translation of this article in a Canary Islands journal.

The mayoress of Güímar, Carmen Luisa Castro Dorta (PP), met recently representatives of the United Canary Network Against the Animal Cruelty, Abel Román and Domingo Chávez, who promised to present a plenary motion to ask for the end of cock fighting and hunting with dogs, and that the Government of the Canaries dedicates 50 % of its budget for investigation into projects without using laboratory animals.

Güímar will ask for the support of the remaining municipalities of the Island to these proposals in the next meeting of the Canary Federation of Municipalities (Fecam), with the target to raise in common to the Government of Canaries the prohibition of cock fighting and hunting with dogs.

Román and Chávez explained to the mayoress “the gravity of the current situation on animal maltreatment” in the Islands, and requested the support of the mayoress to start “immediate measurements against the abuse and cruelty to animals”.

Let’s hope they make some positive progress.

  • Tenerife – What the tourists don’t see – the true Tenerife

Podencos Tenerife 400 7 3 2017And the podencos on Tenerife, Canary Islands, continue to suffer. Below is a Spanish dictionary translation of this newspaper article published on 7th March 2017.

The difficult relationship between hunters and animal rights lived this weekend a new episode, this time in the District of Valleseco. Several members of the first group have denounced in the national police that some unknown, supposed defenders of animals, on Saturday broke the padlock of a few kennels located at the entrance of the neighborhood – in a Court of the mountain – and released several hunting dogs, which could not be recovered by their owners until Sunday noon.

  • Puerto Mogan, Canary Islands…what the tourists don’t see

Hundreds of thousands of people flock to the Canary Islands on holiday, whether for summer sun or to escape the cold winters of the UK and Europe. • Helping the Lanzarote podencos – why we do it

Rick Beauchamp is a volunteer for SARA Protectora on Lanzarote, Canary Islands. He helps rehome rescued podencos in the UK. He writes about why he does it.

Very often people ask us why we bother rescuing dogs from Lanzarote when there are so many homeless here in the UK?

Our answer I feel rarely convinces, as you have to see the suffering of the dogs to really appreciate why we feel that we have absolutely no choice but to try and help.

Recently we came across this article on the SARA website www.saraprotectora.org.
I have transferred the article verbatim as it adds to the poignancy.

  • Another cruelty case on Tenerife

Santa 250 9 11 2014This poor soul is a Podenca Canario which was dumped in a Tenerife perrera by her hunter owner, after a lifetime of producing babies – and starvation. She could barely stand, had a huge abcess on her face and a fever. She is being cared for by the vets of Albergue Comarcal Valle Colino. Once the fever had subsided, the abcess was removed but an inoperatble tumour was discovered on her face.

These are the updates from Ailsa Mcgibney from 9th November. An offer of a comfortable loving home has been made, where Santa, as she has been named, can live out her days.

  • Tierra Blanca refuge, Tenerife – kennels urgently needed for winter

Tierra Blanca kennels dogs 1 250 10 2014Centro de Protección Animal Tierra Blanca on Tenerife has 260 rescued podencos all desperately needing forever homes. With Winter coming these Kennels would provide shelter for so many of them. The cost for the metal about 130.00 Euros, labour voluntary, good idea and indestructable.

If you can help towards providing more of these kennels 260 podencos – that’s not counting all the other dogs! – please paypal to this address.

And if you can offer a forever home to a podenco, even better. The dogs are microchipped and vaccinated, no adoption fee – all they ask is the cost of the flight out of Tenerife.

  • Accommodation on Tenerife urgently needed

Tenerife Refugio la esperanza marisa 250As regular readers know, I remind people about the podencos on the Canary Islands who have a terrible life with the hunters and whose main chance of a forever home is on mainland Europe. Here’s a heartbreaking story about a shelter on Tenerife. Please help if you can.

Marisa Traen’s refuge (Refugio de la Esperanza del Sur) with her many Podencos has to move!

The new piece of land has been found, but is not ready yet to receive the many animals!! And now the council of Adeje announced a few days ago, that the property where they still are, has to be cleared before the 8th December!! (supposedly for promoting the place with hotels) and that the 89 dogs will be put to sleep if they are still there on that date!
