As if the volunteers helping the Spanish animals didn’t have enough to contend with,
rescuing and repairing abandoned dogs and cats, they suffer at the hands of those against what they do. Some people are just pure evil. Pepis Refuge near Seville recently suffered an horrendous attack on their dogs, Alan Brian tells the sickening story.
‘It all started a few days ago for us, I say that because our vet told us it takes about 9 days to act, warferin or rat poison as it is better known. We had a beautiful chocolate brown podenco boy who had the most fantastic nature, we called him Chet. When we came to clean him one morning, we saw blood in his pen and he was looking quite sad.
We decided to call our vet,it was then when we heard Chet make like a coughing noise, only to see it was blood coming out of his mouth! We rushed him to the vets where we explained what had happened and straight away she checked his gums and they were very white. He was immediately put on a drip, but he lost the battle for life less than half an hour after being taken in.
Then came the second blow, we noticed one of the other dogs looking rather sad, so we called the vet again. She had gone out on a call, she told us that she would be back in an hour. So we took him down when she phoned to tell us she would be there in 15 min, this time she looked in his mouth and said he too must go on a drip, and we need to go back to the refuge now.
We asked what she thought the problem was and she said ‘let’s go to the refuge first as I need to take blood from one of your dogs’. She then went through every dog checking their mouths and said ‘there are 7 more dogs I am not happy with, they need to be kept a close eye on, check to see if the gums get any whiter. If they do; call me immediately.’ She took the blood and left. The second dog had the transfusion and survived
So what was the problem, we asked. She then told us they had been poisoned, but she had not told us her suspicions until she was sure!
We now have another dog in the vets being sick and dehydrated, we await the outcome, but this looks very doubtful that it will go in our favour. As for all our other dogs, it’s just wait and see. The cost will hit us very hard, but the loss of the dogs will hit us harder; we feel we have let them down. This is meant to be a safe place for the dogs. We have been trying to get over the loss of our 8mth old grandson; then I was rushed into hospital for 13 days, heart problem. NOW THIS!
Nothing like this has ever happened in the eight years we have had the refuge. We now need to desperatly raise the money to put up metal fencing at the back of the pens. This would stop anyone being able to just walk across the back of the pens and poison the dogs, at the moment it is open and easy for them to do it.’
If you can donate towards the cost of the fencing, please do so on their website.
This is an example of what goes on in the more rural areas of Spain. Jane and Alan have a good idea who has done this, in retaliation for a complaint Alan made to the Guardia Civil about one of their dog walkers being abused. Intimidation of animal rescue volunteers along these lines is frequent.

There some truly evil monsters out there poor dogs. You could not save Chet but at least the others have survived so far. People who act in this manner are pure instruments of evil it does make me wonder if the gates of hell opens on occasion in that case the gates of hell must be in Spain. Animals there are so badly abused and mistreated. You have to wonder if the monsters doing it even have a soul I would be inclined to think they are evil soulless monsters I hope they go back to hell where they belong.Rip Poor Chet and other victims of this local monster of yours. Vitamin K can counteract the poison waferin as far as I know it is also a good idea to have active coal capsules on hand in case it should happen again as it helps to neutralise toxins at a low cost merely a sugestion best wishes and good luck.
talk about hitting you when you are down nasty evil b—— f—– cowards the law needs to punish them responsible for what they have done
i will put a little donation through on friday just going to do a little one to macu other bits is there for charl when she requires it
This is so dreadfull, to do this to innocent dogs is pure evil. My heart goes out to Jane and Alan as they seem to have had their fair share of problems lately.
I will send them a donation although wish it could be more but hopefully they will be able to get the refuge secure so this can not happen again.
Hugs
Pauline
My heart goes out to the good folks at Pepis and to the dogs who died and are suffering from rat poison. This heinous, malicious act is beyond comprehension. I will visit the Pepsis website to donate. Let’s raise funds to also add surveillance cameras in order to catch the sadist(s) who did this to these pobrecitos.
Sending a donation towards the fencing. What a horrendous thing to happen there are some evil Bastards about.
It is such a shame that poor Chet has passed away due to poisoning after all this poor dog has been through he deserved better, I hope the people/person who baited the kennels wasn’t wearing gloves & ingested some himself!?!?, I say let the punishment suit the crime when it comes to cruelty against all animals but especially to these kind tender loving breeds of dog, we will visit the Pepis website & donate towards the fencing, it should be a double skin with the outer skin being electrified so that any unwelcome visitors get a nasty shock when trying to get to the animals, I agree that a CCTV set up should be budgeted for too & if we the public can donate enough to Pepis for the fencing and CCTV then Alan & Jane can continue doing the fantastic job they have been doing so far, Our thoughts are with you as we know & understand that it is a difficult time for you both (Alan & Jane). As I sit here with My Podenco X Orritas (Jack) Rescued by our daughter Natalie from Forest Hills, Estapona, Malaga, Spain, While he is cuddled up to me & giving me untold amounts of affection it still stuns me that there are people out there in rural Spain that get their kicks out of injuring, maiming, or killing a defenseless animal, let the punishment suit the crime we say & we can live in hope that somewhere near Pepis there is a person who is in agony after accidentally ingesting some of the rat poison they baited the kennels with at Pepis, I for one hope they die a long slow & agonizingly excruciatingly painful death, one less cruel bastard = a better chance for these beautiful animals we know as Man’s Best Friend.
Absolutely and hear hear! Thanks for caring so much.
