I try hard to remind people that the podencos in the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands have a very tough time. Even worse, their main chance of a forever life outside of the shelters, where they are well looked after and never put down, is to be adopted on mainland Europe. Here’s wonderful news from SARA Protectora on Lanzarote. and please remember, if you are holidaying especially on Lanzarote, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, go along to the local dog shelters and support the volunteers who work tirelessly to help the islands’ abandoned and unwanted.
‘The Podencos are no longer invisible–
This month, even with the always sad to see that the abandonments still happen, and more at this time, we have great joy to see that finally, the Podencos are ceasing to be invisible.
Four of our nearly 80 Podencos, have been adopted in the Czech Republic, have realized how wonderful they are, they are tender, sweet, loving, friendly … and they have been able to see it.
Our country continues to believe that podencos only serve to hunt and because of this legend, they are overlooked as if they were not the same as the other dogs, They also know how to enjoy a family and a home and it is really what they are wanting.
We hope that this legend gradually fades and goes away and those people not only outside our country, will be able to see that there isn’t waste that must be treated as such of, if not the opposite. Podencos are noble creatures, yearning for affection.
Still, we are left with a good feeling that 4 deserving souls are enjoying forever homes and we greatly enjoy the photos we are receiving of our Podenquitos, in freedom, enjoying the company of wonderful people who value them as they are and give them the opportunity they are looking for from behind their cages.’
Contact SARA Protectora for more information, and if you can call and see them at the shelter.
