  • Canary Islands – holiday destination or hell?

Tell everyone what life is REALLY like on the Canary Islands – all of them, even the smallest island – for podencos. Please don’t turn away, your sorrow is nothing compared to the suffering of these hounds. If you want to help, get in touch with any of the associations on this list – they need all the help they can get.

  • SARA Protectora, Lanzarote, Canary Islands – please adopt an Island podenco – give them a chance

SARA_Cafeina_190I have highlighted often the problem for podencos on the Spanish Islands…Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Ibiza, Mallorca. People go on holiday to these places and don’t see the hell of life for the dogs and cats (mainly) on the islands, where the only hope of a forever life is to be adopted abroad – Europe, Scandinavia, UK.

SARA Protectora on Lanzarote have dozens of deserving podencos… Rick and Lesley Beauchamp take a few to the UK for rehoming, a few go to Germany and the Czech Republic. BUT the cost of flights can be prohibitive and also it needs one person for every 2 dogs on a flight.

Here are a few of the dozens in the refuge on Lanzarote…over 60 Podenco Caqnario, different from the Podenco Ibicenco in appearance but not in character – if you can’t adopt one, please go along to the shelter and walk a dog, support the volunteers, anything to help them keep going.

  • Arrecife, Lanzarote – SARA Protectora Podenco Publicity Day!

SARA Lanzarote even 190t 24 11 2012I’m catching up on posts, as have been away on holiday for a week with my son and grandsons. Here’s a marvellous event which is much needed in the Canary Islands where the podencos have a very hard life, and local people need to know what marvellous pets they can make.

SARA Lanzarote are organising an event on 24th November at Arrecife, and hope that it’s not too late for podenco associations elsewhere and on mainland Spain to organise something at the same time. Here’s the report from SARA Lanzarote.

  • SARA Protectora, Lanzarote – podencos find homes in the Czech Republic

SARA Mestiza 1 250 24 1 2012I try hard to remind people that the podencos in the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands have a very tough time. Even worse, their main chance of a forever life outside of the shelters, where they are well looked after and never put down, is to be adopted on mainland Europe. Here’s wonderful news from SARA Protectora on Lanzarote. and please remember, if you are holidaying especially on Lanzarote, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, go along to the local dog shelters and support the volunteers who work tirelessly to help the islands’ abandoned and unwanted.

  • Canary Islands, SARA Protectora – help the hounds on the Spanish Islands

SARA Milka 190 3 2012I can’t emphasise enough about the podencos on the Spanish Islands, Canary Islands and Ibiza. Their only hope of forever homes is on mainland Europe. Please don’t overlook these deserving hounds when you are thinking of taking a podenco into your home.

These two beauties are in the care of SARA Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.

Milka is about 6 years old, a large podenco canario, and was found abandoned with her sistenr in the volcano on Lanzarote. She’s not much of a hunter, prefers to be with people, loving and obediante, walks without being on a lead. A fantastic hound for a companion dog. She is very good and happy

  • Holidays in Canary Islands? SARA Lanzarote needs your help

SARA Mestiza 1 250 24 1 2012SARA Lanzarote (Canary Islands) have sent this story about this podenca bitch, yet another of life’s victims discarded by the hunters. Podencos are used on the Spanish islands for hunting rabbit, and suffer horrendous cruelty at the hands of the hunters, just like the galgos and podencos on mainland Spain. The only hope for the deserving dogs in the shelters on Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Ibiza, is to be adopted on the European mainland. Please bear them in mind when considering offering a forever home to a dog. Otherwise these dogs will spend their lives in the shelters.

    SARA tells Mestiza’s story.

  • TARA Shelter, Gran Canaria – a successful neutering programme

TARA neutering 1250 09 2011TARA Animal Shelter on Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, in September ran a neutering programme for dogs and cats with the help of a Danish team of vets and nurses. Brian, a volunteer with TARA, reports on the success.

The dog and cat neutering project in Mogan county from 14 to 21 September proved a big hit for all concerned.

It was a most collaborative effort indeed: TARA Animal Respect Association recruited Danish Friends of Animals to supply professional animal medical staff to Gran Canaria providing the surgery skills and pharmaceuticals as a donation to the local cause of animal welfare.

  • TARA Podenco Pico – finds his forever home on Gran Canaria

Eva and Pico 190 TARA Gran Canaria 08 2011 Look at this fabulous photo. We all love a happy ending and here is one for Pico, one of the TARA Gran Canaria podencos. Here’s what Brian says.

‘This photo is of The Best Little Dog Shelter in Paradise’s beautiful Eva and her gorgeous new baby boy! Too cute for words!

Eva, The Vigilent Volunteer of the Year 2011, from the beginning was a wonderful foster mother for many of the little canine cuties from The Best Little Dog Shelter, and wisely swore never to fall head over heals in love with any of her wards, to keep her fostering efforts a pristine example of what grand fostering is all about — love and release!

  • TARA – saving the animals on Gran Canaria – visit the shelter

    Beloved TARA Friends & Animals

These are the guys searing in the scorching sun all these hot summer days. Give yourself a great self-esteem lift and mosey on down to the shelter for a WALK, TALK, TOUCH SESSION with this lovely lot! They will raise your spirits, and you will send theirs soaring! Human time and attention will greatly heal the hurt until a foster or adoption companion comes their way.

WALK, TALK, TOUCH SESSIONS are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursdays from 1715 hours (5:15p.m.); Fridays and Saturdays from 1100 hours (11 a.m.).

Come and enjoy our community playing to make Gran Canaria a Paradise for Animals too!

Happy Paws & Claws, Brian, TARA Volunteer

A note of horror – their facebook page says ‘Dogpound in north of Gran Canaria is getting 25 abandoned dogs EVERY day. Do not buy but adopt !!!’ That’s just on one small island in the Canaries!
