‘Don’t you think it’s unfair to have to pay 21% VAT for a service that is of primary necessity, such as the health of your animals? U.S. too. Going to the vet cannot be a luxury, and therefore, this week we have presented a series of fiscal measures to the Government that we think you will like.
Reduction of veterinary VAT from the current 21% to 4%: Our proposal seeks to reduce this tax to the super-reduced rate of 4%, or eliminate it completely, to make veterinary services more accessible.
10% deduction in the income tax return: We propose that families can deduct up to 10% of veterinary expenses in their income tax return, with a maximum saving of €500 per year.
What do we get with this?
The Competition & Markets Authority are looking into vet fees. About time too! They are ab absolute rip off because vet clinics have been taken over by big businesses like hedge funds, pension funds, pet insurance companies. I’ve discussed this recently on my blog but now the news is out there about the CMA action.

In conversation recently with a veterinary nurse, she said that pet owners now are not taking their pet to the vet when it first falls ill but trying to medicate themselves. Often this results in the pet becoming more ill, so that when the vet finally is consulted, sometimes the illness is too advanced and the pet is euthanaised! And if the owner wishes for the pet’s ashes, this charge is also proving prohibitive.
The result of this –
A question was raised on social media recently by a lady adopting a rescue podenco, which will have spent 3 days travelling to her in the UK. She was concerned about the podenco being stressed out and asked for advice on any product to help calm the dog. This was my comment in answer.
Pheromone is a natural ‘product’of a female body when it gives birth as it calms the newborn and takes away the stress of birthing. This is why it is so important for a newborn animal to suckle soon after birth. I occasionally use a product with pheromone called Beaphar CaniComfort for my blind podenco when travelling distances, as he sometimes gets upset by the very loud noise of car tyres on rough tarmacadum – because of course he can’t see it. Not all products which claim to calm an animal contain Pheromone – so you need to check the ingredents of a product and discount it if it does not have Pheromone.

In my years of visiting Spain with L’Europe des Levriers, I had never heard of the Spanish hunters celebrating podencos – until recently, when on a chance visit to a facebook page I read a post from Kevin Walker about ‘celebration’ of the Podenco in Andalucia. Below you can read his report.
‘From 2003 until 2012, I was fortunate to own a house and live in the inland Andalucian town of Cuevas de San Marcos. It was notable for several things. There were ancient caves in the cliffs above the town, we were a couple of kilometres from the huge reservoir and dam of Iznajar and it was said that we were the originators of the breed of dog, the Podenco.
Many years ago Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends rescued a female podenca abandoned on a golf course which had a terrible back injury like Frodo. So, introducing Frodo who is looking for a forever home.
‘Frodo is a very sweet and submissive dog. The scar on his back is still very sensitive and every day the volunteers have to put sunscreen on it so it does not hurt. He only lets himself be cared for and loved.
Frodo is affectionate and already enjoying walks outside the shelter. Help Frodo find adoption.

Tina Solera of Galgos del Sol has over 20,000 followers on her association facebook page. So let’s hope this new initiative will find homes for many of the ‘invisibles’ – the podencos who have been in shelters for years.
‘We put a call out recently to see if we could help any galgos or Podencos that had been locked away in perreras for a long time.
We’ve had tonnes of messsges about Podencos, they really seem to be forgotten. We’ve also had messages about lots of pods on the streets in an attempt to stop them going to the perreras.
The ones already in for years seem to be seen as a lost cause. It’s sad either way when not in loving arms.

Well, it is not a dream, and from the Animalist Party we are fighting to make it a reality.
This initiative could change the lives of tens of thousands of animals rescued by animal protection entities, who are going through real economic hardship to be able to support them.
For this reason, the Animalist Party with the Environment (PACMA) has asked the first vice president and Minister of Finance of Castilla, María Jesús Montero, to include animal protection entities in the social purposes box of the Income Tax Declaration.

His story: Rescued in terrible conditions (in 3 days he travelled more than 30km between 3 mountain communes in extreme winter weather conditions), he was able to recover thanks to expert techniques. We cried tears of joy when we knew he was safe, under our protection.
Behavior and sociability: Sueño is a podenco love. He arrived exhausted after a difficult rescue, his physical and mental condition were terrible, terrified and very weak. With a lot of delicacy we managed to get him to love and he proved to be a very happy, playful and affectionate dog (he loves pats), he is not scared at all!
