  • Electric collars on podencos – torture for 2 in England!

    Electric collars on dogs are banned in Europe but the UK still allows them. This is the story of torture for a podenco in England. Begs the question, why adopt a hunting breed and use one of these collars to try and stop it chasing?!!

    YOUNG PODENCO FROM MANCHESTER / UK REGION IS RAISED WITH A POWER COLLAR

    In the summer of 2023 we adopted 4 pod puppies from a Spanish animal shelter. They grew up in a Spanish boarding house and one of these 4 puppies has obviously pulled the “A-card”.

    Never before have we brought a dog to England, the interested woman (Claire…. ) was very interested, everything was positive, she LIED to us SO …. it’s hard to bear.

  • Podenco Campanero Yinni with Galgos 112 lived in a railway station

    Yinni has been at the residence for a year and is ready to be adopted or at least go to a temporary foster home until her furever family arrives.

    Yinni is between 1-2 years old. When we found her she was abandoned and had taken refuge in the train station, sleeping on one of the stairs. She shared food with the cats of a nearby colony.

    She is a very beautiful pod, everyone loves her, she’s big in size, more or less like a greyhound. She is healthy and active, loves to play with other dogs.

  • Separation anxiety in dogs

    We have always had more than one dog so we’ve been lucky that we have never had to deal with the problem of separation anxiety. But galgos and podencos are used to living in packs, so it is something which could be a problem if a rescue is adopted as an only dog. Having said that, some – notably ex racing greyhounds – have to live as an only dog.

  • Skeletal podenco on the streets in the rain….

    Hunting in Spain finished at the end of January but there are still hundreds of dogs abandoned. This poor podenco will soon die if it is not taken to safety and the vet.

    In urgent need of veterinary attention. My friend has 6 dogs and two of them are very territorial.
    Needs to be picked up, foster home, adoption or shelters.

    Poor thing is skeletal, how much he has suffered. Spread across all social networks, it’s very urgent.

  • Podenco Friends Appeal for Esca and Hope vet fees

    From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends. Regular readers will know that over many years Bev has helped hundreds of podencos, and it’s not often she asks for help with vet fees. Please support her on this appeal.

    ‘Esca & Hope.. They are both due their annual reviews.

    Most of you will know that Hope was born with problems with her back legs basically her patellas are at the back of her knees. The tendons and ligaments in her back legs never fully developed and are like stone but it’s never stopped her getting on with life, she is 10 years old this year.

    Esca was caught in an animal trap which snapped around her front leg, it broke the radias close to the wrist, she also lost about 50% of her tendons and ligaments. Living on the street for weeks heavily pregnant, too much damage was done to the ligaments and tendons, they were beyond repair.

    In the last few days its has come to our attention within the podenco community of a trainer in the UK that claims it’s important to investigate responsible e-collar inclusion, to help protect all animals concerned whilst still letting the dog be what he is! that even a vet in the Canary Islands recommend this to the owner .

    This is the first of a couple of posts in which I will write addressing the issue of using “Electrical Training Aids ” something I would never do..

  • How far will dogs travel on their own – the amazing tale of a Podenco

    Rubi is no longer lost!! Polly Mathewson tells the story.

    ‘We have some wonderful news, our dear little Rubi is no longer lost. This might sound more like a Disney fiction Movie but it is a true story!

    Rubi was lost in Alcalalí, she has been on an epic journey the last 2 weeks across the mountain a distance of 40kms and returned to the place in Beniaia where she lived as a free spirit being, fed by a group of villagers for 4 years who loved and have missed her.

    Despite our best intentions Rubi has chosen the place that is forever home to her and this is where Rubi will stay. Thankfully we had her vaccinated and sterilised and everyone in Beniaia are celebrating she has returned and we are thankful she is safe.

  • Podenco Haiku hoping for a forever home – with SOS Galgos

    Introducing Haiku. He is a beautiful podenco hound found abandoned in the countryside. He had to be rescued with the help of a cage trap due to his fear of humans. He is learning to trust and he is an absolute sweetheart. He has a great personality, is sociable with other dogs and cat friendly too.
