  • Lanzarote, Canary Islands – hell on earth for Podencos

From From Asociación para la Defensa contra El Maltrato Animal Lanzarote ! Email : ademalcanarias@gmail.com

    HARIA MUNICIPALITY, LANZAROTE

In December 2020, we received some images and videos of dogs in a deplorable state.

    Video

We reported at the beginning of 2021 at the Haria City Hall and as we found out afterwards, no complaint was handled when the previous animal welfare councilor @Evelia Garcia was in the position.

Since then we have tried to get the authorities to take measures, but communication with the City Hall of Haria has been very difficult.

  • Podenco with severe leishmania needs help

    Pod with leishmania 400 6 2024
This is a story from a young Spanish volunteer Pepa Tenorio about a poor abandoned podenco. Imagine ignoring a dog on the streets in this condition – what is wrong with some Spanish people?!

‘Paola is a girl from where I used to live who asked me for help a few days ago for this poor guy… No words needed, apparently, the GNT of the people has been seeing it like this for more than 2 years, and until today NO ONE has been dignified to lend a hand…. As far as I know, it’s the second case in 2 months that an animal appears in this state, exactly the same, half blind and almost certainly devoured by leishmania… the previous case had to be euthanized, nothing else for the vet to do… what’s going on in this area???. I see a lot of humans and little humanity.

  • The reason Podencos need high walls and fences in an adoption home

From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends – yet another reason why anyone adopting a podenco should have an enclosed garden of at least 2m high.

  • Galgos del Sur billboards – removed by the local council!

    Galgos del Sur billboard 400 1 5 2024
    From Galgos del Sur.

‘Due to the pressure exerted by people with great power linked to hunting, the company with which we had contracted for the whole month of May for four advertising fences in Cordoba, has removed the advertising of our campaign: It is not Culture, the Rehala and the Montería is Abuse. No administrative or judicial resolution to order it.

They have violated our rights, including freedom of speech. This is not democracy. We live in a country where lobbies like hunting or bullfighting exercise the power of censorship and imposition of barbaric customs without citizens being able to speak against it. We don’t feel hand tied but we will keep fighting.

  • Asociacion Galgos del Sur – trial of hunter who killed 5 dogs

Read the story on this weblink from January 2024. Apologies I’ve only just found it. Have asked GdS what the outcome was.

  • Hydrolyzed diet for dogs

I recently had to visit an emergency vet with Rosie, who had bad diarrhorea over a bank holiday weekend – why is it always a bank holiday when they are ill?!! Starving her hadn’t worked and she was pretty poorly. Half hour with the vet – £300 consultation fee (UK rates!) and £17 for kaolin medication. So I claimed from my pet insurance. A query came up from the assessor vet – had it ever been suggested she have a hydrolyzed diet? I’d never heard of it – in the first instance – and secondly the vet had recommended chicken and boiled rice for a few days – the usual recommendation for a dog with an upset stomach.

I’m pleased to report that firstly Rosie made an excellent recovery on the kaolin, chicken and rice, and secondly the pet insurance paid out on my claim.

This is a weblink to an article on a hydrolyzed diet.

  • Galgos del Sur – 15 podencos rescued from a rehala hellhole

    Galgos del Sur 400 1 5 2024
    From Asociación Galgos del Sur

‘At the beginning of May 2024 we rescued 15 podencos of the Hornachuelos rehala. They all came in bones, malnourished, wounded and full of parasites. They had been through hell. Luckily they are already getting the best care.

We need urgent help. We owe €25000 in veterinary clinics. We just can’t take it any longer. Over 130 dogs rescued in 4 months and 150 at our shelter.

    Video

Mawi was confiscated from Lucena (Cordoba) rehala. If we hadn’t gone to his rescue he would have starved to death along with other dogs from the same litter. He’s so much more recovered now.
