  • Does your dog talk to you?

Some dogs are more vocal than others.  I’m not talking about barking, whether it be as an alarm because someone is at the door, orbarking in play.  I’m talking about your dog talking to you.  My Podenco Rosie loves carrying one of her toys in her mouth, especially when I’ve been out and return home.  She nakes a lovely soft growly noise, tail wagging furiosly, for anything up to 2 or 3 minutes.  I love it, and of course talk back to her!

  • Every Podenco deserves to be seen, loved and valued

    From Bev Farmer, Podenco Friends.

It is so important that people hear about the struggles we face in rescue with the Podencos. Blanca’s tragic loss was devastating, but I hope her life was not in vain. Her legacy lives on in every Podenco we have gone on to rescue since.

The perrera where Blanca came from is located deep in the countryside of the Valencia region, where many hunters keep Podencos. For many years, unwanted dogs have been handed in there when they are no longer considered useful. (more…)

  • In Memory of Blanca

I’ve been involved with the plight of the Podenco since 2007.  Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends was one of the first people I came to know.  One day I saw a photo of an old podenca dumped in a perrera and contacted Bev, to see if we could save her.  I would help with expenses etc.  This is the story from Bev.

‘Every year, Blanca’s post appears in my Facebook memories. 2013. 13 years ago. I will never let her be forgotten.

Blanca was 13 years old when her owner handed her into a perrera in Valencia. Paid the service fee knownIng that a dog of that age would never be adopted and be euthanized That was her reward after all those years of loyalty and service. (more…)

  • Dog poisoning – what to do

As we all know, dogs will scavenge and eat a multitude of things they pick up.  Some of these can be infected or in some cases in the garden, poisonous.  They generally should know what to steer clear of eating, but not always.

Adopted through Amor Podenco, her name is Chica and she was adopted when she was one year old, now she is three.

Her adopter says ‘it was hard for us to trust each other and I could not leave her alone, Ishe escaped once and did not return home until hours later.  We live in the countryside and she now enjoys walks with me in full freedom.’

  • Podenco Campanero – the big podenco of Spain

    No photo description available.

Introducing the Podenco Campanero and his crosses. A large-sized Andalusian podenco often crossed with Portuguese, Ibizenco or little-known mastiff and like so many podencos in Spain, also mistreated and humiliated for being part of the rehalas in the main hunt. Most of them are invisible because they remain their whole lives locked up in hunters’ kennels where they live crowded without seeing much sunlight.
They’re called BELLERS because on hunting days where they go in a hurry harassing the prey, a bell was placed around their necks…

  • Podenco Geo living the life of love

    No photo description available.

A year ago we found NeoGeo abandoned and chipless near a field frequented by hunters. His life has changed a lot in these twelve months, just like for us. He is so loving, beautiful and good, that we forgive him how he destroys things when he has to stay alone at home with another sister podenca. Now we can’t imagine living without him. We don’t know exactly when he was born, but for us his real life began on our side, far from the hardships of his old existence. Happy birthday Geo.
