The Podenco Paternino de Huelva (also known as the paternero or perro de Paterna) originated in the municipality of Paterna del Campo in the province of Huelva, Andalucia.
 
Key Characteristics
  • Origin: Developed in Paterna del Campo, Huelva, shaped by natural selection in tough Mediterranean brush and oak dehesas. [1, 2]

  • Purpose: Bred primarily as a tenacious, resilient hunting dog for small game (rabbits, hares) and packed hunting (rehala) for big game in dense, rugged terrain.

  • Appearance: A medium-sized, sturdy variety of the Podenco Andaluz with a fine nose, strong build, and alert expression. [1, 2]

  • Coat & Colors: Common coat colors include white and cinnamon (colorado), white and black, tricolor, or occasionally brindle 

  • Recognition: Formally recognized as an autochthonous provincial breed in Spain, with thousands of registered specimens supported by regional associations and the Provincial Diputación of Huelva.
