“Save a Podenco in Gran Canaria” is an animal shelter run by volunteers. Since 2017, we have been dedicated to the rescue, protection, and raising awareness about Podencos. Because they are used for hunting, Podencos are excluded from current animal protection laws, which makes it very difficult to help them.
We rescue them, find them foster homes, and prepare them to be happy; to have a family that lasts them a lifetime. (more…)

Akira Animal Sanctuary is now Pepito Refugio de Perros but they still carry out the rescue, shelter, foster and rehoming of Pedrera’s unwanted and abandoned dogs. As always, Podencos are amongst those hoping for forever homes. Meet Sammy
Sweet girl- Loves people & other dogs- Great family dog She was brought to us severely wounded – with two toes so badly injured they needed to be amputated. She has been recovering in a lovely foster home (big thank you Run!) – but she is now looking for her forever home. She is housetrained, loves people, good with other dogs. Great family dog. She is 5 years old. Who will give Sammy a chance?
Contact the shelter if you can give Sammy the forever home she deserves.
This weblink will take you to Nin and Laika, 2 more deserving podencos hoping for forever homes.

Eleven years of loyalty… and now all Princesa wants is a warm bed and someone to love her.
This is Princesa, an 11-year-old Podenca who is searching for a loving retirement home. She is currently in the Valencia region of Spain.
At a time in her life when she deserved extra love and care, Princesa was signed over to Friends of Aprop after developing a health condition that is easily managed. Sadly, because she was no longer considered “useful,” her owner chose not to stand by her through her golden years, leaving the shelter to give her the care she deserves. (more…)

How can this little Podenco puppy be ignored, no one has asked for him. A shelter is no place for a puppy. He’s 5 kilos, aged 8 months, is very loving. He is in Huelva (Andalucia), but can travel in Spain.

Chicken is usually recommended, along with rice, as a good for dogs especially recovering after illness. When I visited a shelter in Spain some years ago, raw chicken carcases were delivered from a chicken processing factory as food for the rescue dogs. I regularly feed minced cooked chicken to my dogs without a problem.
However, dogs can have allergies to certain foods just like humans. so can they have a chicken allergy?

From Hope For Podencos
Deejay is every bit as striking as he is sweet. A graceful Podenco Ibicenco with movie star looks, he trots around like a show pony and has completely stolen the hearts of everyone who’s met him. Rescued after being found stray, Deejay has shown us what a lovely, balanced young lad he is. He can be a little shy when meeting new people, but once he knows you, his affectionate nature shines through and he’ll make a wonderfully loyal companion. He’s fantastic with other dogs and absolutely loves to play. (more…)
