  • Podencos at Pepis Dog Refuge, Pedrera, Seville

Just look at this beautiful rough-haired podenca, a recent arrival at Pepis Dog Refuge. She sounds an absolute sweetie and would love to have a forever home. Please get in touch with Pepis if you can help her.

She’s not the only podenca at Pepis, here are some more – little Vinny, only a young boy, and some handsome podenco cross too. And what about Bill and Ben, podenco/basenji cross. They have lost hope of finding a home and a hearth.

If you can’t adopt a dog, what about sponsoring one. Have a look at this page for the dogs needing sponsorship.

Please join Teaming – it only costs 1 euro/month, or £1. More information here.

  • Tenerife – What the tourists don’t see – the true Tenerife

Podencos Tenerife 400 7 3 2017And the podencos on Tenerife, Canary Islands, continue to suffer. Below is a Spanish dictionary translation of this newspaper article published on 7th March 2017.

The difficult relationship between hunters and animal rights lived this weekend a new episode, this time in the District of Valleseco. Several members of the first group have denounced in the national police that some unknown, supposed defenders of animals, on Saturday broke the padlock of a few kennels located at the entrance of the neighborhood – in a Court of the mountain – and released several hunting dogs, which could not be recovered by their owners until Sunday noon.

  • What the tourists don’t see – the true Tenerife

Bit behind with posts as strong winds took out our telephone line and France Telecom are useless to get them to come out and repair!

Please vote Si in this survey if you think ALL hunting in Spain should be banned. Worrying is that the No voters are in large numbers too!

This is a link to a video on facebook showing appalling conditions in which podencos are chained and kept in one place on Tenerife. I have asked the contact if the dogs have been rescued and he tells me ‘the authorities think there’s no problem with these dogs…these dogs are ( the Spanish believe) are in good shape:: it’s clean, they don’t have wounds, and they are fed… BUT … hell nooooo !!!!’

  • Remembering Podenca Jasira

Bev Jasira 400 3 2017This beautiful but sad photo is of Podenca Jasira, rescued by Bev and Warren of Podenco Friends and adopted by Manja in the Netherlands.

Here is her moving story and two videos showing just how a skeletal podenca can recover with the right care.

‘Two years ago at the beginning of March 2015 a very special Podenco Ibicenco named Jasira died. Her story moved me from the beginning: she was rescued by Beverley Farmer and Warren Beards, two human angels who live in Spain and spend all their time and energy to rescue these beautiful and extraordinary dogs.

She was more dead than alive when she was found. Even though she had experienced nothing but evil and harm from humans, she learned to trust them again and accept the love and care Beverley and Warren provided. Physically she seemed to recover very well, until a little over a year later she died. As sad as this was and still is, at least she had experienced what it means to have loving humans care for her. Her name means ‘courageous’ and that she was.

  • Help us to close Olivenza, Extremadura – Spain’s worst perrera (kill pound) – sign the petition!

Olivenza perrera petition 400When I published my definitive guide to the plight of the galgo – From Heaven to Hell – in 2010 it contained a report from a volunteer named Rosa on the problems with one of the reputedly worst privately owner perreras in Spain, Olivenza. For years animal activists/association have been fighting to get it closed down permanently. I have now received this appeal from Mo Swatek of Pro-galgo International, please sign and share the petition.

  • Packs of wild podencos on Ibiza!

Ibiza pack of wild podencos 400 2 2017This is a Spanish dictionary translation of the newspaper report. It is not the first time I have reported about packs of podencos living rough on Ibiza. Some years ago a cazadore was prosecuted and jailed for letting his podencos roam the streets and the ones he bred from were kept in terrible conditions.

New packs of wild podencos alarmed residents of Es Cubells (video below)

@Noudiari/Como already took place years ago, the podencos packs return to populate the area of Es Cubells, triggering the alarm and complaints from neighbuors, who denounce that they invade their property and even fight with their pets.

IB3 Ara Mateix program has reflected the complaint of a neighbour, who explains that the podencos “are everywhere” and that can add up to “200 or 300” in the area. Also explains that they appear by his house in a pack of “30 or 40” to attack my dog. “One day I am going to find it dead”, he says.

  • Galgos France – helping the Gran Canaria podencos

Galgos France logo 400Galgos France working with two British podenco rescue associations. News from GF website.

17/2/2017 Two of our protégés came out last week from the hell of the Canary pound: Bryonny and Rosetta are in a pension in Tenerife while waiting to leave for Irene in Alicante (Hope for Podencos) who will take care of them and arrange supplementary tests while awaiting adopters.

They will join Tianna who will soon leave with host family in the United Kingdom and Erica.

So there are 6 podencos sponsored by Galgos France that are still impounded. Penelope, Sweets, Spinet, Smiley, Lottie and Nancy …. Hopefully they survive until their release …
