Whilst the Saving the Gran Canaria Podencos facebook group is helping to rehome a few to mainland Europe and the US, the 90 podencos entrapped in Mogan are still enduring their hellish life. The following was published this week on the 90 Podencos in Mogan facebook page. This is an edited translation.

‘The College of Veterinarians of Las Palmas has just presented the “Pet plan” to request of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria. It is confirmed as dogs intended for hunting (mostly podencos) are mistreated not only by the hunters but by the officials of the respective consejerìas and councillors. In a document of 112 pages, only mention is made at this point where in so few words it is so gross. Hundreds of podencos and galgos marched through the streets of Frankfurt, Germany on 3rd June 2017 to raise public awareness about the maltreatment of the hounds at the hands of the Spanish hunters. Video on this link.

Telde is a town and a municipality in the eastern part of the island of Gran Canaria, Canary … The city Telde is located 4 km from the coast and 16 km south of the island capital Las Palmas.

In the city of Telde, unscrupulous individuals are committing an atrocity against animals that have no name. They are using dogs during the hunting season, and when they are no longer used to hunt, they are thrown alive by a cliff, so that they do not have to feed them any more.

They repeat the same thing year after year: they keep the dogs in pitiful conditions, making them go hungry and without giving them a minimum of affection. Then they hunt with them, throw them down the ravine at the end of the hunting season and in the next season they look for new dogs to replace the previous ones. Thus repeatedly and without any sanction by the town of Telde.

There are clear indications of who are the authors of this barbarity and in different plenary sessions of the city council has already been requested to be persecuted and to pay their punishment. But the City of Telde DOES NOTHING. He claims that they do not have to pay for the necropsy that must be done at the Veterinary Institute to investigate how these dogs have died and in whose hands.

Sign this petition so that we are many who raise the voice of animals. Demand the Telde City Council to take responsibility for stopping this killing of dogs.

The culprits have to be punished so that next time they will think twice before acting like this against these defenseless animals.

Today the notorious privately run Olivenza Perrera closes its doors to dogs, as its licence has not been renewed. But there are still huge problems for the 104 dogs still in there.
