On 22nd April, the Hunters of Santa Cruz de Tenerife are organising a demonstration against the new law of tenure of animals, and claiming that everyone tells lies about their cruelty to their hounjds!
This sweet little podenca is Malta, small Podenca Andaluz, rescued but in kennels, where she is still nervous. No one has asked for her so a foster home in Cordoba/Seville area is needed to help her gain confidence, or adoption.
Once she gains trust, she is sweet and affectionate and gets on well with other dogs.

On Sunday 2nd April 2017 over 300 people and many dogs marched in the streets of Malaga to protest about the lack of effective punishment meted out to abusers of animals, particularly hunting dogs.

Apologies from Jane at Pepis Dog Refuge for not posting much this week but as you will see it’s been a tough one. Probably one of the worst yet. Anyone following this page will of seen Kiora, the Galga that was recently dumped and shortly after died of an unknown illness. Well sadly, the illness is still unknown and it’s rampaging it’s way through the refuge. We currently have 3 dogs at the vets, 2 in the refuge hospital on drips and several more showing signs of coming down with it. We are praying at the moment they will all survive it.
Regardless, this is going to result in a MASSIVE vet bill. We obviously can’t quote it yet as at the moment we have no idea how many more are going to need treatment. If you can donate ANY amount it would be a great help.

Further to a couple of articles I published last week about cock fighting and hunting dogs on the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, here are the rules for the keeping of dogs and cats there as recently decreed. It’s that man again…probably lives in a cave and seems to be blind!
“Two issues listed in an annexe and in a single additional disposition of the new ordinance of animals of Santa Cruz, Tenerife, pending publication in the official bulletins after it was adopted in plenary on the last month of January 2017, would make it almost impossible to possess and transport hunting dogs in the conditions that the majority of practitioners of this modality now do, assures the President of the Society of hunters Chicharreros, Antonio Porras, who recently addressed this theme to the elected representatives of Citizen Security and Environment, Zaida Gonzalez and Carlos Correa, respectively.
A new project has been created by Angel Navarro Perez and Ambulorca which aims to help families who have an accident travelling with animals in their car which will rescue and protect physically and psychologically these animals, thus giving, security and peace to the emotionally wounded famuly, if they have to be taken by ambulance to a hospital. An Ambulance will up people and take them to the hospital and, in turn, another special “ambulance of Lorca” will assist the animals simultaneously and will activate a protocol of animal welfare, with the support of a great professional team of multidisciplines.
Deanimals lawyer Raquel López Teruel says this is a great initiative and a necessary project that will help a lot of lives of people and animals.
The project has been at the Congress of the Spanish Society of Medicine and the ER.

Hunters and galleros of Güímar, Tenerife, with the support of the local hunting federations of the Canary Islands and the National Federation, have teamed up to present an initiative in defense of cock fighting and hunting with dogs and oppose a motion presented to the Mayor Carmen Luisa Castro (PP) by the United Canarian Network Against Animal Abuse, which asks for a ban on Cock fighting. controlling the use of hunting dogs and to put an end to experiments on animals in laboratories, among other measures.

The mayoress of Güímar, Carmen Luisa Castro Dorta (PP), met recently representatives of the United Canary Network Against the Animal Cruelty, Abel Román and Domingo Chávez, who promised to present a plenary motion to ask for the end of cock fighting and hunting with dogs, and that the Government of the Canaries dedicates 50 % of its budget for investigation into projects without using laboratory animals.
Güímar will ask for the support of the remaining municipalities of the Island to these proposals in the next meeting of the Canary Federation of Municipalities (Fecam), with the target to raise in common to the Government of Canaries the prohibition of cock fighting and hunting with dogs.
Román and Chávez explained to the mayoress “the gravity of the current situation on animal maltreatment” in the Islands, and requested the support of the mayoress to start “immediate measurements against the abuse and cruelty to animals”.
Let’s hope they make some positive progress.
