  • 1st May – Day of the Podenco

Bev Jasira 400 1 5 2017Apologies, readers, that I didn’t get to publish this on 1st May, due to being tied up with other things not involving computers! Here’s what Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends wrote for Day of the Podenco.

‘I wrote these words on the 2nd January 2014 on the day we rescued Jasira, today I reflect back and still the battle continues. Maybe one day those with the power to affect change here in Spain will recognise the Podencos for the national treasure they are, for us we continue to be their voice.

I see so many Podencos in so many terrible situations. I see them by the roadside badly injured, having been hit by a car and left to die. I see them wandering the countryside, emaciated and very often with broken limbs. I see them with their spirits all but destroyed from having been incarcerated in a perrera. After this amount of exposure to such horrific sights, it’s hard not to begin to accept this as the norm here in Spain.

  • Scooby Protectora – appealing for medicines

Scooby Max 400 4 2017This is Podenco Max, he was born in 2004. He was rescued last weekend (22/23 April 2017) in Mazarron, Murcia, by the Scooby team, along with a couple of dozen more podencos and galgos, including puppies. He deserves somewhere to spend his twilight years – he’s lucky to have survived to this age in the hands of a galguero! If you have a comfy bed for him, contact Scooby.

With hundreds of animals in the refuges, Scooby is also running this appeal.

‘Some important things to treat our animals are starting to scarce… Like Amoxicillin + Clavulanic Tablets, Meloxicam Injection, Doxycycline Tablets and Syrup, Metronidazole Tablets and Syrup (Flagyl) and very urgently is needed IMMITICIDE. We also need shavers, field cloths, 6 + 1/2 sterile gloves, blue pathways (small) , oxygenated water and internal deworming … If you have some of these items and you would like to donate them to us, we will be deeply grateful.

  • Podenca Pia – have you seen her?

Polly Pia Lost 400 4 2017Some years ago one of my dogs was stolen. Although her chip was registered with a couple of databases including a veterinary one, she has never turned up. It’s the not knowing what happened to her which hurts…was she stolen and rehomed, was she killed…here is a plea about a little podenca, if you know where she might be, please help.

PIA – A lady saw a dog resembling PIA around January 2017 at Scotstown Moor Nature Reserve in the Bridge of Don district. This may have been another Podenco as there are a few in Scotland now but it may also have been PIA as she could be anywhere.

If you are local or walk your dogs in this area, please keep an eye out! If you think you may know where PIA is, please don’t be afraid to come forward …. as promised since the beginning of this search, if she is found to be in a good home she will not be removed after all this time.

  • Podenca Saffra – what a difference good food and love can make

Bev Saffra 400 4 2017What a difference love and food can make to a terrified starving podenco puppy. Little Saffra rescued 23 days ago and now she is looking so much better, has gained weight, her coat is getting a shine, she is negative for med diseases, a real sweetheart and ready to search for her forever sofa.

From a terrified puppy found all alone wondering where her next meal would come from sleeping out in the cold. With some tender loving care and good food, she is so much happier sometimes that is all it takes.

Contact Bev at Podenco Friends if you can offer Saffra a forever home.

  • Podenco Friends – finding forever after in Sweden

Many of the podencos rescued by Bev and Warren of Podenco Friends made the journey to Sweden to forever homes. Here is a video of one stunning boy, flying out of Alicante to Tina and his forever. Contact Bev if you can offer a podenco a forever home.

  • Podenco Footprints on Lanzarote

Huella Lanzarote logo 400Regular readers will know that I have been appealing for help for the Canary Island podencos since I first created my blogs back in 2007. A prohibitive factor in the adoption of Podenco Canarios is the cost of flights to mainland Europe for forever homes. In the past three or four years there has been an explosion of publicity for these fabulous hounds, largely due to facebook pages. I’d like to introduce another Lanzarote group who are helping hounds in the Teguise area. Huella y Huella – footprints.

‘Huella a Huella is a group which raises awareness, sensitization and well-being in general to the animals in Lanzarote from schools to those working in the field of animal protection and promotion of awareness-raising actions.

So we want to create a set of which all form part, institutions, associations and citizens, and together, bring this great project to term.
