Below are a selection of videos illustrating the lives of Spanish hunting dogs and their care. Whilst in a couple of the videos the dogs appear happy with wagging tails, the conditions they suffer, both packed in trailers and in a rehala where the dogs can be hired for hunting, are abhorrent.

Saving the Gran Canaria podencos
As I wrote earlier in the week, for several years I’ve been plugging away publicising about the podencos in the Canary Islands who suffer terrible abuse and whose only hope for forever lives is to be rehomed on mainland Europe. Another association now helping the Gran Canaria podencos is Hope for Podencos and you can read about their work on this link.
Last Hope for Podencos…adopt from an association, not a perreraSadly there is no good news about the 90 podencos near Mogan, still caged, starved and dying. Local volunteers are still working with the local authorities but making little progress. That’s the problem when those in authority are also probably hunters!

Podenca Canario Sansha waiting for her forever home
Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends is also helping the Gran Canaria podencos.
Bev says, ‘This is Sansha one of the GC podencos rescued from the terrible building where they were left chained up 24/7 and they waited so long to be saved. Although very underweight and lacking muscle tone when she first arrived with us, mentally the ordeal does not seem to have affected her. A very happy and outgoing character who has a great sense of fun and now is ready for adoption. She is 2 years old, 62cm to the shoulder and 16 kilos. From Lanzarote perrera to comfort and love in Norway
I’ve been publicising about the plight of the podencos in the Canary Islands for several years now. At that time SARA Protectora on Lanzarote worked hard to home some, both in Germany and the UK. The first story I published was about Rick and Lesley Beauchamp who help home rescued Lanzarote podencos in the UK. I’ve plugged and plugged away to try and get more help for these fabulous hounds, both from Lanzarote and Gran Canaria and finally in the last couple of years, people are coming forward to help the volunteers on the Islands struggling to save the podencos, most of which end up in perreras.
Bev and Warren of Podenco Friends now help foster and home podencos from both Islands. This stunning podenca is Athena, saved from the perrera by Laura Johnson of TheKennelKlub on Lanzarote and flown to Bev in Murcia. She has just arrived in her forever home in Norway. These are the before and after photos.

Update on Spirit with Refugio la Candela

‘During this weekend, as many of you know we traveled to Valencia, where the companions of the South Valencia hospital were waiting for us to carry out the last and final operation of reconstruction of their jaw and the introduction of a titanium prosthesis.
With this, we have managed to lengthen your lower jaw 8 centimeters in total, which will allow you to eat alone and live in general much more comfortable and independent.
For us, this adventure began the day we met him, almost a year ago, a year of operations, tests and difficulties; but above all a year of hope.
Because the lessons we have learned from Spirit who does not get tired of fighting will never forget us in many lives that we live.
Today we want to thank especially the full team of auxiliaries and veterinarians who have treated us like at home; because it has been beautiful to share the excitement, joy and also the fear with all of them, to see their eyes in tears with ours and to feel their hugs.

URGENT URGENT URGENT. Debora found these two tiny podenco puppies in Canals, Valencia, they are about 15 days old, eyes aren’t yet open! URGENT -abandoned podenco puppies near Motril, Spain
This is an urgent appeal for help for these abandoned podenco puppies in Motril. Caroline Bejar sends the information below. Please contact her if you can help, and share widely.
The information I have yesterday there were 5 puppies. today I contacted the person who sent me the photos she lives in IZBOR (GRANADA) about 25 km from Motril where I live. Some neighbors have caught 3 puppies, the person who contacted me to catch a female today and a male with the mama in the street. The puppies are 2 months old, the mother is very fearful and difficult to touch. That’s all I know. I would like to know if they can be made to help the 2 puppies and the dog.

Pray for Podenco Spirit today
Do you remember the story of Podenco Spirit, the poor hound picked up off the street with the lower half of his jaw shot off?! After all the care of the team of volunteers with Refugio La Candela and an amazing veterinary team, today Spirit is in the Valencia Veterinary Hospital to have an operation which will change his life, hopefully, and he will be able to eat properly.
Here’s what the team say.
Spirit is already in the field of surgery of the Valencia sur hospital veterinario.
Now the moment has come; all vets and doctors who take care of the operation are ready.
He was just put in the operating theatre where he’s prepared for anesthesia and will start the operation we’ve been waiting for, which will normalize his life.
