  • Pepi’s Dog Refuge – living in the olive groves amongst the hunters

Pepis 400 004I recently spent a week at Pepi’s Dog Refuge where I took the money raised from my Fun Dog Show to help pay some of the vet bills. The weather was baking hot, temperatures over 40 degrees, so the dogs spent a lot of time sleeping in the cool of their kennels. The roofing is special material which keeps out the rain but also keeps out the sun, provided by Anpana association in Italy.

On the day I arrived, we visited the vet. A podenco puppy had been found injured on the road in the village and xrays had been taken of his broken leg. The vet asked Pepi’s to take him. His leg was in a splint as in some cases with young bone, the injury can heal itself, new bone can grow. The pup was named Vero, he’s an adorable little chap and no doubt when he has recovered, he will soon find a forever home.

Another young podenca bitch is quite an escape artist and able to climb out of her kennel to spend her days in the corridor run! She too arrived with a broken leg which has healed perfectly. The two small podencos are Bill & Ben, podenco x basenji. They have been waiting for far too long for forever homes. Has no one room in their heart and home?

    Saturday was an interesting day!

  • Hard life for Podenco and Galgos in the olive groves of Seville

Very busy chez Brennan at the moment, preparing for my 5th Fun Dog Show on 4th September, raising much needed funds for Pepis Dog Refuge. This is the downside of what Jane and Alan live with on their doorstep. This is why they opened the refuge, to save the dogs the hunters abuse in this way. And while all this is going on, the dogs in the refuge are stressed out,and why we need to keep helping them help the hounds.

    Jane Brian writes.

28/8 2016 This morning we witnessed something we wished we had not. We have seen a Podenco in the vets with its eye shot out, that was horrible enough, but what we saw today will stay with us for ever.

  • Valencia perrera – injured, dumped to be killed – rescued into safe caring hands

Bev Campeon 400 31 8 2016When a podenco is adopted from a rescue, it makes room for a podenco from a perrera. And here’s an example, a young podenco with a back injury rescued from Valencia perrera and on his way to Podenco Friends. Bev farmer writes.

‘He will be with us soon …. Campeon his hunter/owner has handed him to the perrera in Valencia signed the papers for permission to sacrifice. 3 years DOB 10/10/12 old has an injury to his back. Thanks to Angie Robinson and her team Asociacion Valencia Perrera Dogs who work really hard to find places for them. If all goes well he could be with us by today (Friday) as he needs that back injury to be seen by a vet’.

  • Saving the Lanzarote Podencos – TheKennelKlub & Podenco Friends

Lanzarote podencos 400 1 31 8 2016Lanzarote… the podenco is the primary dog for hunting on the island many are abandoned handed into perreras the majority dont make it.. Adoptions are far and few between due to the lack of flights overseas that will carry dogs. We want to make a difference, Laura Johnson of the Kennel Klub on Lanzarote and Beverley Farmer from Podenco Friends are working together to save these six podencos recently handed over by their owners or found abandoned … the clock is ticking please help us save Kesha, Safina, Hania, Nala, Leyla, and Bruno.

Bruno and Safina are out of the perrera and now in private kennels where they have space to run a comfortable bed, people to play with and they can see daylight. Laura and the team on lanzarote was there to transport them to their new residence we will post a video shortly. Thank you to everyone that has donated this allowed us to get these two out and will be seen by the vet. It appears Bruno has some issues with his balance, too early to speculate what the problem may be. Hopefully have some answers in a few hours after he has seen our vet.

  • Safe at last – now little podenca Iona needs a leg amputation

Lynn Pauludros lives in Northern France and works tirelessly to help the Spanish galgos and podencos, adopting some herself. Many podencos get caught in vicious metal snares and end up needing a leg amputation – I’ve brought several out myself with the L’Europe des Levriers team.

Lynn has appealed for help to pay the vet bill for this little podenca to have a hind leg amputation, please donate a little if you can.

  • Chiclana, Cadiz – little wounded podenca Camila needs help

Podenca with leg wound 400 7 2016On the many journeys I have made into Spain on rescues, to bring galgos and podencos back to France for foster and homing, there have been several tripod podencos. These poor hounds often get onto land where illegal metal snares have been set. This is an example of what can happen, although it’s know know how this poor podenco ended up in such a state. But rest assured, she has been rescued and is in the vet clinic. Here’s the story.

‘She’s already rescued and has been named Camila after Santa Camila, the day of rescue and hopefully Santa Camila will protect her. She has been operated on and is recovering well with a good prognosis. She will stay for a few days in the veterinary clinic of Chiclana Avila Forner, Cadiz.
