  • Podenca Tasha now safe with PEPA – waiting for a forever home

Pepa tasha body 2 400TASHA’s STORY

“Lots of people have been involved with this little one. She was with Kirsty for a few months then with a foster home near Javea and now she has been with Jacky Hazeleger since November.

Tasha was picked up 28/07/2015 after having been ignored in all likelihood for many months by people walking past. We only found out about her when PEPA was involved in another rescue and were alerted by Christina Royce that there was an injured podenco. Tasha had a broken hip and leg she had been like this for many months and no one did anything! Can you imagine the pain she must have been in?

It does not end there. Tasha had Sarnia; she needed painful antibiotic injections to heal her coat; this not bad enough she also tested positive for leishmaniosis and rickettsia ( now very low level leishmaniosis) so we had to wait even longer to do her operation. Finally on the 27th October this poor broken girl had her operation. She was very broken not just her bones but her spirit – she wanted nothing to do with people and it has taken her a long time to get where she is now.”

    **** I’m Zeus.****
    It’s a long time since I left.
The truth is that I was never happy, always treated me badly.
I lived in a place surrounded and with a small roof to get out of the cold and the rain.
I’m just out to hunt, until one day they stopped doing it.
I don’t run long enough for that person to whom I belonged.
A few days later they took me in the middle of the field with another dog like me and they cut us loose.
I didn’t know what to do, whether to run, or wait until my master gave me an order.
    I was disoriented.
I’ve never lived through a similar situation.

  • Podenco Penelope moving on to her forever life.

Bev Penelope 250 23 6 2016A photo that captured many people hearts.

bev Farmer of Podenco Friends writes.’This week (23/6/2016) Penelope will be joining her new family, a forever sofa a home where she will be loved and cherished.

I will never forget the day we collected her she was so thin and so scared her fragility and vulnerability was palpable. A moment where you wish you could tell her its all going to be ok and she would understand your words. More shocking once examined by our vets and after taking xrays. She had a badly dislocated hip and a fracture to her ankle but they were old injuries. I cannot imagine the level of pain she suffered and she was surviving on the side of a busy road. Further complications she tested positive for leishmania if left there her chances of survival were not good. In time Penelope became part of the family and her cheeky character began to shine through. Like so many Podencos their ability to over come such adversity always amazes me and she was no different.

  • 2 Podenco Campaneros rescued from a hellhole – update and another one saved

    La Bienvenida 2 pods 250 15 6 2016Update 15/6/16

    Google translation.

The first thing to give back to the whole world, thank you for your support, your affection, and the interest that you guys are showing by our little fighters. No doubt that we send all of your strength and good energy, we will never tire of saying thank you with all my heart.

Also, we ask you a little bit of patience, we know that you’re eager to know every minute on them and their evolution, we all want to recover as soon as possible, but this recovery will be slow and needed a lot of time, care and affection, and we are only a few Volunteers, so if a lot of times we can’t give you that information, or publish update do not doubt that it is because we are doing other thousands of things to help them, to them and the other 200 animals to the shelter and that we also need us.

  • Protectora La Bienvenida, Ciudad Real – Podenco Campaneros in rescue

I first visited La Bienvenida refuge, Cuidad Real (200km south of Madrid) in July 2007 with the French association L’Europe des Levriers. We collected 4 galgos from there to bring back to France and forever homes. One of them was Karmel who I adopted and shortly after I created my blog Galgo News to publicise the plight of the galgos and podencos.

This is the story of 2 Podenco Campaneros (the large white woolly podencos used to hunt boar and deer) which La Bienvenida have rescued.

This is the story, photos are on their website – warning, very distressing.

If you can help with the costs of the enormous vet fees which will be incurred to help these 2 hounds recover, details are below.

  • Saving the Gran Canaria podencos – how you can help

Fore many years now I have been publicising the plight of the podencos in the Canary Islands – Lanzarote, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, El Hierro – their main hope of life forever is on mainland Europe and across the Atlantic. The new group Saving the Gran Canaria podencos is doing sterling work, Suzanne Stacey is a vet in the UK who has taken this problem to heart and is already doing sterling work.

Here are some of the stunning podencos in the perrera, most of them will be killed – such an unnecessary waste of life, of beautiful dogs which will make wonderful companion hounds.
