Saving the Lanzarote Podencos – TheKennelKlub and Podenco Friends

Bev Lanzarote podencos 400 15 1 2017Ever since I became involved in the plight of the podencos and galgos back in 2007, as a member of a French rescue association fostering many we brought out of Spain, I have been publicising the terrible suffering of the Podencos in the Canary Islands. Their only hope of a forever life other than across the Rainbow Bridge is to be adopted on mainland Europe. In recent years new associations have formed in the USA and Canada and now many of these deserving and loving dogs are finding their forever sofas there. Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends is helping Laura Johnson of TheKennelKlub and the Lanzarote Podencos.

‘Things have been a bit quiet on the Podenco Friends facebook page so just an update on where we are with the Lanzarote Podencos… First some good news, none were handed into the perrera we work with over the Xmas holidays; that doesn’t mean to say no Podencos were abandoned. There were but in different areas on the island so were handed into other perreras that have rescue groups helping there.

Bruno is now in the USA and having the time of his life. Lala is with a family in the UK who had previously adopted a podenco from Lanzarote, Hania is with Lozzas Podenco Rescue in the UK, Leyla has settled well in her new home in the UK, Caricia went to Belgium through Friends for Second Hand Paws VZW to a foster home who fell in love with her. Those words “foster failure” were spoken and they adopted her. Kesha will travel to the USA in the Spring, her confidence has improved so much. Martino will leave to join his new family in Canada next month thanks to the Extraordinary Galgos and Podencos of Canada. We are waiting on some good news for Kristi and Athena.

So that leaves us with Diesel, Safina , Kody and Neo looking for a forever sofa. In addition to the Podencos rescued from the perrera one of the veterinary clinics on the Island asked for help to find homes for Tulipan and Amapola plus there is Goldie a Podenco cross thats has been with the KennelKlub for a long time looking for a home.

It was a fast and furious three months and sometimes very stressful. In addition to helping these we still had all the other dogs in our care, But we made it and so many Podencos whose future was bleak now have a second chance.

Laura and I will continue to help where we can along side the other rescue dogs our respective rescues have. We hope to instigate a project on the Island that may reduce the issue of the Podencos being abandoned and once we have more information will update you with our plans.

Thank you for been there, your support was amazing without you these podencos wouldn’t be where they are today.

Unity make us stronger and what sometimes can seem impossible becomes possible’.

Bev Martino Lanzarote 400 15 1 2017This is Martino, mentioned above. He is 8 years old and has been in the perrera twice! The first time he was handed in by his hunter. Another hunter took him and who then handed him into the perrera again when he had finished with him! At last he will learn what life will be like to be well loved and cared for.
