Fore many years now I have been publicising the plight of the podencos in the Canary Islands – Lanzarote, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, El Hierro – their main hope of life forever is on mainland Europe and across the Atlantic. The new group Saving the Gran Canaria podencos is doing sterling work, Suzanne Stacey is a vet in the UK who has taken this problem to heart and is already doing sterling work.

Here are some of the stunning podencos in the perrera, most of them will be killed – such an unnecessary waste of life, of beautiful dogs which will make wonderful companion hounds.

I always advocate fostering/adopting a podenco already with a rescue association in a shelter or foster home in Spain. But the Canary Islands don’t have this option- there are not many rescue associations there which have shelters, foster homes are usually full. Please support the podencos in the Canary Islands.
