Podenco Friends – finding forever homes for rescued podencos

Bev Alexa 250 5 2014Two lovely stories from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.

Alexa what a story…. discovered in a remote location in Valencia heavily pregnant. Its not always straightforward to catch them especially in open land and couldn’t give her any sedation due to her pregnancy. Silvia Guau Guau and her team kept us updated and then one day she disappeared for 3 days no sign so she must have given birth somewhere. We never expected how dramatic her rescue would become.

A few days later she was sighted badly injured an attack from a wild boar a call went out to the Spanish community in Valencia and people came forward to help. We got a message they had caught her but could not find the pups what did they want me to do. I had to make a judgement call and say bring her she needs medical attention if we left her, both Alexa and the pups would perish.

To our relief 30 mins later they found the pups hidden away under a small cave. Alexa needed major surgery the pups were only 4 days old Eduardo our vet told us this mum can not feed the pups her milk was infected and she needed a lot of medication. So bottle feeding every two hours began.

Fast forward 5 months and she made a full recovery thanks to Janette Lopez and Alexa will always be her girl. Its not uncommon to get reports of pregnant Podencos out in the campo. Alexa must have endured some hard times, at some point her hip was broken and left to nature to heal. Ive used many adjectives to describe Alexa, but she is just pure class so refined and elegant still lacks confidence but will joining two of our rescued Podencos from Spain in America so will be in good company her future is secure

Bev Chaz 250 5 2014CHAZ

I received an appeal from Jacky Cotton for help with rehoming two podenco puppies. I contacted Bev to ask if she could help, which she did.

Chaz and his brother were both found by a rubbish bin less than 4 weeks old. Thanks to Jacky Cotton and friends, they didn’t turn away and brought them home. The boys arrived here at the finca and made their mark almost straight away.

Dave was quickly adopted and was soon on his way to his forever home in the UK. Chaz “monkey” took a bit longer. He has been such a character and provided us with some amazing photographs of him hurtling around the campo, plus we are losing our in house baby-sitter for the pups.

He has already travelled 1200 kms before he starts his flight to New York, such is the dedication of people who want to help the Podencos. Now he begins his new adventure who would have thought it? tossed away by the rubbish bins here in Spain and soon will be living in Washington DC.
