A journey into the heart of hell

This is not about a podenco, but it could very well be. It is about Seville perrera and a little innocent soul in there, on death row, due to die. Levriers sans Frontieres works with Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert to save these dogs. This is her story.

I have no name, I don’t have an age, I don’t have anything.

I don’t know how I arrived there, in the corridor of death.

I have 10 days before me, to remember my sad life.

10 days of fear and cold and rain which enters my prison.

I sleep on the concrete, in the water, urine and excrement.

And each day more of my companions disappear.

I see them fight, I hear them howl, I hear them plead – then nothing more

A deathly silence which freezes the blood and I smell the odeur of the smoke from the chimney.

I have no more hope.

LSF – a voyage to the heart of hell in a world where an animal has no value. But these images rest in the mind.

The face of an angel who saves and then the face of the devil who kills.

The angel is Andres, a young man, a volunteer with Fundation Benjamin Mehnert, who cries and prays in front of the cage of a dog who will be killed today.

The devil is this young woman, the same age as Andres and she kills each day without concession.

She went into the cage to get the little dog who, in its fear, bit the she-devil. But still she took him to be killed. She would kill him as she usually does with an injection in the heart without the benefit of a tranquilizer first…

The LSF volunteers left with heavy hearts. But then they learnt that the little dog was in fact alive! It turned out that the she-devil did get her out of her cage. And Andrès was able to bargain with a perrera employee who finally agreed to let her go, on the 11th day, when she was supposed to be euthanized.
