I have highlighted often the problem for podencos on the Spanish Islands…Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Ibiza, Mallorca. People go on holiday to these places and don’t see the hell of life for the dogs and cats (mainly) on the islands, where the only hope of a forever life is to be adopted abroad – Europe, Scandinavia, UK.

SARA Protectora on Lanzarote have dozens of deserving podencos… Rick and Lesley Beauchamp take a few to the UK for rehoming, a few go to Germany and the Czech Republic. BUT the cost of flights can be prohibitive and also it needs one person for every 2 dogs on a flight.

Here are a few of the dozens in the refuge on Lanzarote…over 60 Podenco Caqnario, different from the Podenco Ibicenco in appearance but not in character – if you can’t adopt one, please go along to the shelter and walk a dog, support the volunteers, anything to help them keep going.

This is Dove – he has been in the shelter for 3 years now. He would benefit from being in a home environment, please think about giving him a chance of life outside of the shelter.

This beautiful young podenca bitch is Polen She’s only just arrived in the shelter, is not quite 12 months old. Please don’t let her spend years here waiting for a forever family.

Cafeina is another young podenca Canario – only just arrived – end of the hunting season and the bastard galgueros are dumping their dogs…please adopt her.

Figaro – he’s only 3 months old!! A podenco already in a shelter at this young age. Surely there is someone for him.

Tormenta – a terrible name for a young shy nervous podenca bitch who only wants the love of a caring human being to bring out her affectionate character – and a new name!

Raspilla – description says ‘he’ but with this name, I am sure it is a bitch. Such a beautiful young bitch with her life in front of her – if a family will offer her a place in their hearts.

Tagoror – rescued from a dog pound where he had been attacked – another young boy who just wants someone to care for him, so he can give unstinting loyalty and companionship. Give him a chance.
