  • Why you should microchip your pet

    Dogs should be microchipped 400
    It is an EU law that dogs,cats, equines and ferrets (yes, even ferrets!) are microchipped. It doesn’t cost a lot, but it does mean that if your pet is lost or stolen, it is easier to trace. And one should remember that when adopting an animal from an EU country, you should register the microchip in the country in which you live. Again, it’s not difficult. All my Spanish dogs at our French farm were registered with the French microchip database through our vet. Our Spanish dogs with us now in England have their microchips registered with the UK microchip company, such as Pet Log.

  • Podenco Rudy looking for a forever home

    ‘I present to you RUDY a very nice riugh haired podenco who comes from afar since he was with his sister Leire in a Perrera. Volunteer Marita did what was necessary to get them out of this hell.

    They are at the shelter now.

    RUDY at 7 months and must not stay too long at Marita’s. Already by his age and also by the number of cuties down there. With no more space, unfortunately the risk of a fight increases.

    RUDY like his sister Leire are adoptable throughout France, Belgium and the Swiss border.

    They are under association cover via our association.

  • Animal Fostering – can you help?

    Excuses for not adopting 400 2024
    Animal foster carers are worth their weight in gold to rescues and shelters. Many of us would like to help (we fostered many galgos and podencos at our French farm) but for various reasons are unable to. I would love to but we are both heading for 80 years old, with creaky joints! We downsized from our French farm after my last horse died, to a small bungalow with a small garden. We adopted 2 podencos and although as I sit typing this at the kitchen table, I see there is absolutely no room for a third dog bed! Plus vet bills in the UK are astronomical – another victim of Rip Off Britain and investment speculators – hedge funds and pet insurance companies buying vet practices. On small pensions we simply can’t afford another dog or pet insurance.

    Here’s an article about fostering. Although it’s on the RSPCA website, it applies to all animal rescue associations and shelters. There is a shelter local to most people, please consider helping if you can. Some of the rescues will help with feed/vet bills.

  • Podencos for adoption with Hope for Podencos

    Hope for Podencos was founded in 2014 by Irene and Steve Allan at their finca. Vet Suzanne came on board and they purchased a separate fiinca. Sadly not long after Suzanne died in a road accident. In 2020 Irene sadly passed away and after another couple of years, Steve returned to the UK.

    However, there is still a dedicated team working to help the maltreated podencos in Spain.

  • AA Dog Rescue – 4 year old Podenca Wendy is hoping for a forever home

    She might be grey faced but Podenca Wendy is only 4 years old. Here’s her story from AA Dog Rescue.

    ‘Say hi to Eve the Podenco. Eve was found alone & unwanted on Christmas Eve, hence her name. She was extremely thin, not microchipped or claimed!

    She is 4 years old (dob 11.02.2020) and a small medium in size weighing around 12-15 kgs. She has a very calm, sweet & gentle nature & is good with other dogs.

    She has settled in so well. In fact, the staff call her Queen Bee! She has left her past behind and knows what she wants … she throws her food out of the bowl and only eats the meat and always finds the biggest fluffiest bed! Well why not, she so deserves it.

  • Time and Patience needed for homing a rescue dog – Cova needs a new home

    Some people expect too much too soon when they home an adopted dog. It takes time, patience and understanding – especially as most Spanish hunting dogs have suffered maltreatment in their previous lives. Many podencos are adopted abroad, which means the following allowances have to be made as it could be weeks or months before the dog really settles –

    1. the dog may have been a street dog surviving for weeks or months
    2. it may not have experienced any kind humans
    3. it may not know how to live in an enclosed space such as a house
    4. it may not have been walked on a lead
    5. it could very well be used to living with other dogs
    6. it could have left behind friends, a particular mate
    7. it’s had a long journey in vans and planes
    8. it’s a strange country with different weather and language

    This sweet podenca is looking for a family. Her owner, a hunter, has passed away and her family has surrendered her (luckily for Wendy), but now she has no one, she has nothing.

    She’s only a year old and is a puppy LOVE. Affectionate with humans and sociable with other doggies! No chip, no shots, not spayed.. because for her owner she didn’t deserve it. But what she does have is a desire to find a family that will love her FOREVER

    She’s in a resi in Malaga, but she needs a home.

  • Podenco Tranquilo from Scooby – in the UK hoping for his forever home

    TRANQUILO’S adoption has sadly fallen through from no fault of his own so is once again seeking his forever home.

    Tranquilo is a 3 year old Podenco. He is a happy, affectionate, very loving, gentle dog who enjoys company and fuss. He came to the shelter in Spain with just one eye but this does not cause him any problems. He gets on well with other dogs. He is well behaved on the lead and would make a super friend for an active family.
