Bring Portuguese Podengos to Light
Another rescue association involved in helping podencos. However, on reading their facebook page, I am uncertain that – with a project director in the USA, not all ‘podencos’ on their facebook page are actually Portuguese Podengos. Some are rough haired black and white. It would seem the team work with volunteers in the Azores, a series of 9 Islands in the North Atlantic ocean belonging to Portugal, rather than mainland Portugal.Regular readers of my blog will know that I advertise Portuguese Podengos looking for forever homes on behalf of the Portuguese association Dogs of Portugal. And in all the years of being in contact with them and Anifiera association, I have yet to see a black and white ‘Portuguese Podengo’.
This is the definition of a true Portuguese Podengo. Basically small rough haired dogs with ginger with white markings, used on sailing ships to catch rats.

Podenco Mikey off to his forever home in the USA.

A couple of days ago I had a request from Naomi asking for help with a Podenco Maneto she had managed to catch after been in the streets for a couple of weeks. He was located 700 kms away so this is where years of friendships networks and partnerships that you can call on to for help ..
I reached out to Tracey McLaurin of Senior Sighthound Sanctuary in the USA .. and asked her, do you have rescues you work closer to where he was located that could any help Micky . Less than 24 hours later. Many thanks to Estela of Proyecto Berta she managed to squeeze a place for him with them.
Even better news Micky is reserved to Senior Sighthound Sanctuary and has his ticket booked to fly out to the USA in April..
From a podenco surviving on the streets to a new life waiting for him in the USA. Thank you everyone that changed his life forever.

2 podencos from Murcia to Canada to forever homes
From Bev at Podenco Friends sharing a memory from 2017.‘An early start for us leaving at 5 am to take Freya and Martino to Malaga airport for their flight to Canada Thank you to Tania Schmitt of Extraordinary Galgos & Podencos for giving these two the opportunity of finally finding their forever sofas.
A collaboration of a number of rescue groups have come together to help Freya and Martino and there will more waiting at the airport from other rescues.
Martino story first began on the Island of Lanzarote he is eight years old an older podenco passed around by the hunters and spent two stints in a perrera the first time six months. Thanks to Laura Johnson and her team from The Kennel Klub they secured his release and prepared him for his flight over to us on mainland Spain.

If you do not want to go with your heart shrinking to bed do not read this, but despite how hard and cruel is a chant to solidarity and life.This is Esperanza, without an owner, without a house without anything, but in her warm tummy beats life. Esperanza appeared in the middle of a field with a broken leg and very pregnant. The leg cannot be operated on until she gives birth, and then if we treat it for infection she won’t be able tofeed her babies.
This is the sort of problem we deal with all the time, appealing for experienced people to take care of Esperanza and the babies, bottle feed them, nurture them and help their Mom give them the attention they need.

How long should a dog go without peeing?
We were lucky when living on the farm in France as our dogs had direct access to a big barn with an earth floor. So we could go out for the day and not worry about them, as they used the barn if they wanted to pee.
Back in England now, our current 2 hounds are both 10, so company for each other when we want to go out and not take them. We can usually leave them 5-6 hours, which is good considering Bo drinks a lot of water. We do put newspaper down in the kitchen just in case!

GPS trackers for dogs
I recently met a podenco owner who has fitted a tracker to her dog’s collar and she can check on her smartphone where her hound has got to. This particular pod does like to explore the sand dunes near their home, so the tracker is very useful. The dog also has good recall.

Podenco Xarnego Max looking for his forever home
This sweet small podenco is looking for his forever home, he’s been waiting a year already – a year of his puppyhood in kennels.The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned…
A home is all Max wants. He’s been with our lovely transporter Roberto for almost six months now, and although he is safe & loved, it saddens us that all he’s known is being chained to a wall by the hunter he was saved from and then life in kennels. He is now around a year old, his whole puppyhood he’s never known what it is to have a family and home.
We are looking for a FOSTER or FOREVER HOME for Max – he’s spent enough time in kennels.
Max is an affectionate, friendly little boy with a side serving of shyness. He gets on well with all other dogs, and loves to have a play in the secure areas at Robertos place. He’s a gorgeous medium sized pod with a beautiful fluffy coat which makes us think he has some Xarnego in him.
Max is vaccinated, chipped, passported & free of all Mediterranean diseases.
