  • Cheap accommodation in Tenerife, Canary Islands – food and drinks not included

Podencos Tenerife 250 3 2013Two stories from PodencoWorld in Holland. To read in English, click on the Translation button top left hand side, drop down menu, click on your language.

The first one is about 12 podencos living in appalling conditions on a farm in San Roque, Tenerife. The foundation Animal Help Canarias reported the poor state of the hounds on a finca. The way the animals are crammed in the back of a private estate, continuously chained without any room to move. The precarious facilities do not meet the necessary hygiene and dogs have “not even enough food or water,” said a spokesman for the foundation. “Neighbors often call these situations to denounce”.

  • Podenca found alive in trash bin with microchip savagely cut out of its neck

Two stories in the news recently about podencos, both the victims of unbelievable cruelty. If you wish to see the pictures, then click on ‘Continue reading’.

This is the first time I’ve had a story about a podenca dumped in a trash bin, always before it has been galgos who have suffered such an atrocity.

Someone had stabbed her and destroyed her neck to remove the microchip. After she was thrown in the trash. she remained there for two days without help. She somehow ate garbage to stay alive. Her neck had been torn to remove the microchip. Luckily someone realised she was there and called the police and saved her.

She is now in Madrid in a veterinary hospital, where they are trying to save her. Her neck has been operated on, and they are working to save her. She has been named Vida.

The volunteer says, ‘I curse with all my strength these monsters, torturers, no guts, no heart, that they are capable of doing these savage actions. This poor dog has had to suffer a horrible agony. We will fight tooth and nail to save her! Irina.animalessinhogar@gmail.com

The second story is about a podenco found very close to death in the campo. She was rescued and attempts were made to save her – you will see in the photo she was too weak to stand, was a mere skeleton, and had severe leishmania. Appeals were made on Facebook for donations to save here. Personally, I believe it would have been kinder to put her to sleep, rather than try and revive her and put her through more suffering. Queen did not survive.

I’m still stuck in the UK because of snow, and struggling to post. Here’s a story I received earlier this week, emailed on to associations I hope can help, and now post you the story. Apologies though, as I’m using a computer which won’t allow me to post pix.

‘On January 6, 2013 I drove with my husband and adopted dog (from a perrera near Malaga, ‘El Paraiso’) from Tarifa to Seville, and on to Cordoba.

We stopped at a rural restaurant for coffee where I became aware of a whole lot of dogs crying somewhere in the vicinity.

  • Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote – hunters abuse podencos in the Canary Islands!

For those of you who holiday in the Canary Islands, spare a thought to the podencos used by the hunters. What happens to them when the hunting season finishes? The lucky ones end up in the refuges like SARA Protectora on Lanzarote, TARA on Gran Canaria, Tenerife Dogs & K9 on Tenerife. But what about the hundreds of others? A report on Television Canaria in February 2012 explained!
