  • Animal Aid Foundation shelter, Valencia – help desperately needed

A desperately tragic situation – if you can help Femke in anyway, please do. She writes –

‘You have probably heard about the Animal Aid Foundation (AAF) in Valencia, which for personal circumstances has to close its doors after rescuing animals from all over Spain for 20 years. I am one of the volunteers helping to rehome the dogs. There are some Podencos left, would you be able to help with finding homes for them? Thanking in advance.

We are also looking for people who are driving back to the UK happy to take a dog or two, for adoption families we find in the UK, so if you hear of anyone…

Please contact Femke through the website.

  • The plight of the podencos

Podenco ears cut 170 9 2 2015So far this month, 25 podencos in perreras have been posted on my ‘Podencos in Perreras’ facebook page. That is just the tip of the iceberg. Many are starving, some are old, some of them are on CESE which means the hunter has handed them in and said ‘kill as soon as possible’. One poor soul has had his ears and tail cut – they usually do this to dogs who hunt boars. shorter tails and ears usually means less hunting accidents with branches and even with the wild boars. They can even cut them legally in the region where it’s not allowed, because according to the law, cutting the ears and tail off is better for the this kind of dog! He is still in the perrera.

Another sad story is of two podenco puppies – about 6 months old – rescued from a river. They had ropes found their necks attached to rocks. Sadly the little boy was already dead but the little bitch was still alive. She is now in the care of an association. (see photo below)

  • Malaga/Estepona area? Puppy training courses at In The Doghouse

Calling people in the Malaga/Estepona area of Andalucia. If you have any puppies which qualify, get in touch with Nando Brown of In The Doghouse.

‘We run a rescue pup course where pups around 10-14 weeks stay with a dog trainer for 5 days, do training, get socialised etc in the hope to get them rehomed – all with Nando. Have you heard of any pups around Malaga area that are in rescue that could take part? The last few have been really successful, a lot of the trainers have taken the ones they had, or helped find homes for them. Be awesome to get some Galgos or Podencos on the course.’

  • Good News from Italy

News from Italy sent to me by Daisy, who translated From Heaven to Hell into Italian.

    ‘Good news from Italy!

After the shock of the news that, in order to lighten the massive amount of work for the Italian magistrates, some crimes (animal mistreatments included!!!) would have been considered as “less severe” -meaning no prison for animal torturers- thousands of people showed their disgust. The President of the Italian Government, Mr. Matteo Renzi replied that animal lovers shouldn’t be worried because these directions are not law yet and they will be modified. He also said that the Government always listens to everyone.

    We really hope so!’

‘Our beautiful Verity and Diana were both resuced from a Gypsie in Valencia. We knew he had more dogs and a lovely lady has been working hard to get some more of the dogs released.
